do i really need the hard parts sold by touratech to add strength to the frame of my bike? they dont come cheap but im away for a 2 week 3000 mile trip two up with full luggage plus even more to strap on. a fair bit of weight. will i be alright? i dont plan to go off road at any point.

please dont say "you do need them" without backing it up with reason, as im skeptical as to why bmw wouldnt have addressed this issue within a service or something

If it doesn't break, then you didn't need it.

If it does break, then you did need it.

But if you do fit it, your bike won't break, so you'll never know if it worked and you really did need it or not.

Bit like insurance really.

If you are only going to smooth road Europe then you should be fine, but if you intend to hit the pot holes of Eastern Europe then you need to think a bit. There have been photos posted where a gearbox has been ruined by a simple off in England but the wrong bit hit the road first.
I have them fitted to my 1100 but I have always done very serious off roading and as it is said, you don't need insurance till you need insurance.

If you intend to keep the bike and explore its off road capabilities get them fitted. If not then don't.

thanks guys. i intend to see 100,000 miles on the bike its at 50,000 now. but to be honest i have an off road bike and consider the GS to heavy to be fun off road anyway.

intrestingly noddy, im going to eastern europe.... im just being tight on this aint i?

Is it worth worrying about for £80? Look at the mounting and make your mind up. I'm only light but after a brief trundle down a gravel track when i first got my 1100 I just ordered one. Fit and forget, even if you don't and it never breaks, once you're aware of the problem it'll be on your mind every time your back end takes a big hit :ymca

You are mistaken on this point. The GS is great fun off road :thumb2

Buy the hard parts and give it a go, it will suprise you!!!!

New gear box case £530, New sub frame £290, labour, VAT, seals, etc etc
A local dealer wanted to charge £1500+ for a new gear box or £1531 for a gear box rebuild with a new case.
So £80 is worth paying.
