Riding along today on my 1100, a loss of power, then backfire, then normal running then a mile later it cut out, like I had hit the kill switch, all panel lights normal, coasted to a stop, all electrics appear normal but when ignition turned on no whirring from tank and nothing when I press starter? RAC man took an hour then jumped two wires in centre of the three connector blocks under front of tank, this made engine start and appears to have "hotwired" the bike to get me home, the dash lights (neutral/oil etc on even with key out) I just cut the jumper and the bike runs as normal?? ideas anyone?

Wires from the ignition switch may be broken around the headstock

Start looking at anywhere the loom's cable tied up......snip them off, open the loom and you'll probably find broken wires from where the steering action's bending them every time you move the bars.

if it is

a new loom can be easily fitted and they are fairly inexpensive. Do a search there are a few posts on the site and some with pics from Steptoe showing how to do it. The 1100's are quite prone to this I believe.

And the guilty component is..........the sidestand switch, popped a bit of bare copper wire into the connector, joined it up and presto a running bike again:D

Those 1100's are only fit for scrap, get yourself one of the modern, faster 12's:P
