Bike on main stand and not in gear, grab rear wheel with hands at 6-12, no movement, hands at 9-3 and again no movement wheel spins without any noise apart from pads on the disc but seems just fine. But if I rock the wheel in a forward and reverse direction I have about 1/2 inch of free movement and a clonk as the free play is taken up in either direction. Any other 1100 owner got this or do I have a problem?

My initial thoughts are UJ starting to wear but would hate to strip and find that they all do that sir.

Just came back from doing a lot of off road in the Alps but havn't noticed anything wrong on the road although its a bit hard to tell with the noise and vibration I get at slow speeds with the TKC's.

Any thoughts welcome thanks

Just checked mine (1999 R1100GS with 82,000km)
Moving the wheel forward and reverse gently in neutral [about 1/2 inch] results in a quiet tap from the drive shaft. I guess this is just the slack being taken up. Definitely no clonk sound no matter what I do.
If I engage a gear then I get a bit of a clonk as the gear is reached when turning the wheel.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Thanks Gecko, I tried a mates 1150 today but could't find any free play at all, maybe the back end is somehow different ?

Nah....I reckon he just hasn't ridden it enough ;) either that or he forgot to take out the retainer pin when he took it out the box :D

And the results at this time are,

Great Britain with........... 1 clonk

Estonia with....................1 clonk

Belguim with....................Null clonk

The score board will be updated later.

:D :) :D :)

I haven`t checked my two yet,but I will tomorrow and let you know....
However,it does make me think it`s either wear in a UJ (remember there`s 2 in a Paralever isn`t there ? ) or if the shaft has a shock absorber like the Mono Airheads,it`s that.
Unless of course, there`s wear on your bevel gear or crown wheel...

I mean i have the slight clonk turning wheel forward and back, but nothing on perpendicular direction. I guess that clonk it's some gearbox or shaft stuff.

No clonk (but play at 12-6 and 3-9)

No play in either bike at 6/12 or 9/3,but one of them did have a new bevel bearing last year.

Can feel and just hear a slight 'clonk' in neutral when turning wheel forwards and backwards on the 47000 mile one.

Hardly at all on the 23000 mile one.

In first, doing the same, there is about 5-10mm wheel movement before the 'clonk' on the 47000 miler.

Just about 5mm on the 23000 miler.

It just appears to be backlash in the crown and bevel gears.
I don`t notice anything when gearchanging or accelerating/decelerating.

If it worries you, find an Airhead with decent mileage, and check it on that !!!
