Hi,

A friend of mine has just bought a 1999 1100RT with 26K on the clock from ebay.
He said to me the ABS light is flashing but the brakes work ok.
He asked me if I knew what to check or what the problem could be and also asked if the ABS unit can be removed.
My bike is a later 1150 with servo abs and I haven't got a clue about the earlier bikes.

Any advice and help appreciated!

Cheers

Adrian

Have a read up/search on ABS sensors One might be faulty or just crud covered so a place to start perhaps?

1100 ABS system is sensitive to battery voltage too, so make sure you the battery and its connections are in good condition before anything else.

If I havent ridden my 1100 for a while, the battery will start the bike but leave the ABS flashing, 2 minutes down the road, a bit more charge in the battery, switch off the engine, restart and ABS lights go out as they should.

No need to remove the ABS, the brakes will work fine if there is an ABS fault (unlike the servo bikes).
As suggested, if the battery is not 100℅ it will cause the lights to flash (indicating no ABS is available).
Also search 'ABS reset' and 'low voltage modification' which may help him sought it.

flashing abs lights

This will most probably be battery voltage, I bought a bike from a guy who had black tap on top of the flashing lights, his mechanic had told him that the ABS unit was faulty. I was 99 % sure that a new battery would solve the problem I bought the bike and it did.

Even if the battery has the voltage to start the bike the flashing ABS lights are the first indicator that you are going to need a new one.

New battery will likely cure it but check abs sensors and battery poles first. Try an Odyssey for long term peace of mind. You can reset the ABS by earthing one of the connections in the 3 pin connector under the seat.
