I know there has been a lot witten about these defectively designed things, but here's a quick question - in order to fix mine, I need to at least release it to get the seat off. It's absolutely stuck solid, the key doesn't turn and no amount of lubricating or wiggling the lock around under the seat (it moves a bit because, of course, the mounting bar is broken) helps.

Any ideas for simply getting it unlocked / getting the seats off so I can replace the part or fix it as discussed in previous threads?

There are two allen bolts that go through the rear rack & hold the mudguard up @ the back ,if you undo them the mudguard drops right down @ the rear you may be able to get at the lock to release the seat :thumb

Look facing the lock - you'll see 2 very small phillips screws. Undo them, pull the lock firmly towards you, and it'll come away from the plastic mounting. insert a screwdriver into the locking mechanism ( not the lock) and twist the mechanism to open .

Thanks!

OK, sorted. Thanks guys.

For the sake of documenting this for the next guy... the problem was that because the whole lock bar floats around a bit (because it's goosed and is held in place with cable ties..) the rear mounting bars of the front seat were interfering with the front seat's lock catch. This meant that the key was absolutely solid - wouldn't even begin to turn.

So, the solution was to strip the lock per Steptoe's advice (thanks) and then disconnect the thin metal rod that goes forward and pulls the front seat's catch open when you turn the key.

After a bit of experimentation, I re-built it with this rod left disconnected. What that means is that the rear catch works perfectly, but because you're relying on the rear seat being locked into place to hold your front seat in position, you lose the option of riding without the rear seat.

It'll have to stay that way until I can get a new part.
