1100 Subframe Reinforcement.

I've done quite a few of the rear subframes for the 1100/1150GS, but I've always done what people have asked me to do, or done it the same as the pictures/drawings they supply. Although they are definately stronger than stock, I've always thought there was room for improvement,and having repaired someone elses effort on more than one occasion, only seemed to confirm it to me.

This is my first rough stab at doing mine today. I'll loose the clamp for the brake line which is no big deal,and the helmet lock, but apart from that, I think it'll go straight on.

I'll finish this one,then test it and go from there.

Why not something between the gearbox tie in and the top frame rails forward and above the throttle bodies?

I mean the gearbox mount areas becomes the weakest link in the chain from the strength that has been added to the subframe?

I'm pretty sure that the new tube would foul the throttle intake tubes if you put a straight tube in there.It would have to be the full length,from the gearbox mount,to the front engine mount,otherwise it would make a new weakspot on the top tube. That's a pretty butch mechanical joint there anyway,and I haven't seen one break there (go on,spoil my day)

What sort of price will it cost? Could you reinforce the rear carrier to hold a top box? I have idea about doing away with the standard BMW carrier and just having a nice steel carrier so my top box can be taken off quick but still leaving a larger than standard carrier. If that makes sense?

Q. why so much re-inforcement round the rear footrest area?
I thought the most common break was on the top rails on the spine.
Q. do you need a larger final drive bearing for the xtra weight?
Edit,how about welding on bespoke pannier frames to the rear frame incorporating quick release panniers,which is also designed to beef the rear frame up as well.now theres an idea..

Cost wise, I haven't worked it out yet, but it won't be cheap, as there is a hell of a lot of work in there. I would guess it's going to be £250-300 mark though.

Weight wise,I don't think it will be excessivley heavier than stock, as I've lost the helmet lock and brackets off the frame before I started, and they were quite heavy.

The footpeg hangers just happen to be there,so they get used to transfer and divide all the stesses from the gearbox mount.Also, a hell of a lot of the hangers are bent out of shape by people standing on the pegs to get on, so it makes that stonger as well.

The top suspension mount is the thing I want to have a good look at as well, because I've seen more than one rear shock punch it's way through that, so that needs beefing up as well.

I weighed it after I finished it today,and it's now 7.7kg. I think it was around 7.5kg before.

Off to the powder coaters next week, gloss pink I think
