1100GS Broken Gearbox Circlip

Sad Bunny

I was just giving the Donkey it's 234000 mile service, and guess what came out of the gearbox on the magnetic plug. That's right, two fecking circlip ends:tears

Now then, the oil was clean and there was nothing else on the magnet,so I guess there is nothing breaking up in there!

The other thing is that the clutch slipped a couple of times in the past week or two.The clutch has done well over 140k,so it wouldn't shock me if it was knackered, but is it possible for one or more of the gears to be spinning on their shaft, giving the same effect as a worn clutch.I've seen rally cars do it before,so could be possible I guess.Gears spin on shaft, warm up and get a grip. But would that make the oil dirty?

I haven't hit anything big since the last time (maybe the odd sheep here and there:augie)so what's happened this time?

Answers on a £50 note please.

Right,where's the beer:beer:

Bums :(

Does the donkey have an unmodified M94 box? If it does I might be tempted to drop it and send it away for some Steptoe / Scriminger related tlc and upgradey goodness. That said, you're far less scaredy than me when it comes to taking things to bits - if you do it yourself, can I watch :D

......

3/ Just keep riding it,until the box locks up at 100mph and throws me under a bigtruck going the other way, exploding into a huge fireball, just before the remains of the bike crash through the windscreen of a schoolbus going the other way, resulting in a massive death toll, and all motorbikes being banned for ever.BUT,you'll all be able to say what a smashing bloke I was even though you never met me......

now if you chose option 3 first time, you wouldn't be faced with this quandry/conundrum again.....

:rose

:D:D

It's a 94 bike and the gearbox was modded just after I had it,and then was rebuilt again after a bearing let go,then again when the first circlip broke,so someone must have done something to it.

vern was the rest of the clip still in place last time? i was just wandering if the grove it sits in was worn
allowing it to pop out and its breaking while being churned about in the box

It hasn't been churned about,it's just the very ends that have come off,and the oil was still pretty clean!

Wellllllll,it might come to that,after all,that's what I bought it for(but I really,really don't want to get it dirty:tears

How about swapping over boxes from the 'Donor'? I suppose the best idea may be to swap over the good bits off the ND and keep the rest as backup bits. The longer you keep it clean the harder it will be to get it dirty!

bloody hell
something must be catching on just the tips i guess
do you have an exploded diagram of the bit you mean?

just noiticed on the pic of the 1st broken clip there's rotational wear ,the bearing isn't lose enough to spin in its housing is it?
