1100GS wiring question

Hi all.

As of yesterday, I'm the proud owner of a 99 1100GS, and rode it 150 miles back home at -5 degrees. Thank god for heated grips!

Anyway, after realising how cr@p the headlight was, I'm keen to supplment it.

Whilst looking around, I saw 2 empty connectors under the beak, on the frame and wondered if they were standard, and if so, what they were for?

Any help much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum Darren, the 1100s are great bikes and Im sure you are in for some fun not sure what your extra connectors are for, lots of these bikes get stuff added over the years, on my 1100 I fitted a HI LO dipping H4 HID lamp into the main headlight, and a pair of Hella FF50s on a lightbar to back them up, many options to think about.

Welcome! The later 1150 std headlights are even worse

I have never yet fitted aux lights to my 11 but the beam on the 11 needs setting so the upper cut off is just above number plate height when stationary. The big headlight has better horizontal spread than the 1150 and from the pics on here a HID makes a big improvement.

For any lighting stuff on here, if you subscribe and open up the search option you will be reading for weeks There is so much info and also people that supply light bars and HID kits to fit so take out some of the hassle for you.

Well worth it and with decent info on virtually anything you want to know about your 11. Also there is a good little group of folk that have stuck with the 11, a bike easily servicable by yourself or through a good independent.

You think thats bad, try an 1150 you'll thing your lights are fantastic!, pay your £12.00 and youll get so much info it will keep you going over christmas and beyond.

Just be aware that non-oe Hid lights are soon to be banned for Mot's. Auxiliary lights will - most likely - not be included in this.

Welcome to the forum and, as the others say, cough up the 12 quid you'll soon save that much.

thats not certain yet, just rumours, but usually theres no smoke without fire, h i d back to normal bulb is a 2 min job for the mot by the way

Thanks for all the help - I'll look into aux lighting and sort out the alignment too.

I'll pay my £12 as soon as I can find my wallet again after the CHristmas do .....

2012 and CARS ONLY. no mention of motorcycles on the info thats been sent out to the MOT testers. nor any mention of Motorcycles in the EU directive that has brought this all about. The issues this change is designed to address do not apply to motorcycles. (self levelling and cleaning)

Not that it bothers me.. I don't have HID on my 99 1100.

What I do have and can heartily recommend is a pair of spotlights from HOW MUCH on this very site.. £89 (when I bought mine) all-in. I have them wired up so that I can switch them on or off with the pilot light.. dip or mainlight.

switch for them on the handlebar.

lamps themselves fixed beneath the 'beak' with the bar supplied.

I have them aimed to improve the dip.. and use them all the time. Marvellous.

as i said, rumours only,the latest mot regs dont specify as you say, its something they said might happen next year,or later, vosa are looking into it at the moment,according to the guy doing my last refresher for mot,s...

Hi guys. I've invested in some ally bar, and I'll be looking out for some suitable (cheap!) spots for now, aiming to upgrade to leds when I'm happy there is no major expenditure required on the bike!

Go and have a look in the "chavs" section in Halfrauds. I picked up a a pair of micro cruise lights which I fitted on my light bar for £19.99. They are wired in with a Nippy Normans switch (whatever it is called) and can be turned on with dips or main beam. I have gone down the xenon route as well, only cause for the last 5 years my cars have had and I really miss them.....
