Advice needed, on engine bar choice. Do I need alloy guards as well.
Will be venturing off road when nads have developed sufficiently.

I have a set of sw motech ones which have done a brilliant job at protecting the tank. with a set of steptoes headguards i htink it would be bullet proof!

Wunderlich bars.

Yep - they're great. Look the part, do the job - one of my old 1150s did a full 360 on the left bar (diesel on roundabout) - scratched the bar, scuffed the case but no other damage. Also of course don't need to be removed for servicing, and they have mounting points for lights

I've had four sets on different bikes and well pleased

Bars

Don't use the original BMW adv bars, fall off and they dig in the road and flip the bike over and do a LOT of damage. Designed to protect if falling over but any faster and disaster strikes, it happend to me 'cos I ignored advice
from all and paid the price!! (bloody expensive!). So, do a search and avoid these like the plague.

H&B Bars

H&B Bars seem to offer the best options. I have had 3 types and would pick these if I needed too again, they actually saved my leg in 2003 when I had a very close call with a car. The bike was written off at the time, but the bars saved me.

Another consideration would be Steptoes head guards which I currently have set up with regular ADV bars. A piece of advice on this is that they didn't help when heavily off road in Vermont when one of the screws ripped through the thread and snapped it off.

::nenauDoes anybody know if the steptoe head guards will fit with H B crash bars

can't see why not as you don't take the bars off to service.
Only on the very early BMW Engine guards ;)

Yes they will (I have Stanton head guards, but I understand Steptoe's are identical)...

I have SW Motechs and was going to fit H&B but my only reservation is that they bolt into the gearbox mounting I believe, so if you have an off, I would be more concerned about damaging the gearbox as well, something my GS specialist mechanic also advised on.

By saying this I am not indicating that I would rather save my gearbox than my leg, but at the same time everyone who has the SW Motechs seems to think they are good.

I am not putting them down as everyone seems to think they are spot on...I have a set in my shed which I havent fitted yet so thoughts welcomed...!:thumb2

Ordered and received the Wünderlich bars.. they look fantastic, and they're painted silver (why Touratech only offers them in black for the 1150, I'll never know.. ran out of stock maybe?)
