I've not had the time to test ride an s10 yet but am seriously considering swapping from my 1150adv to one. I've read all the write ups from owners on here and elsewhere. I checked one over when they first came out but at the time had no inclination for a change, the standard of finish compared to my 1150 didnt seem as good and as i ride all year through the salt and other crap for work so i dismissed it out of hand. Did anyone ride theirs through the winter this year and not clean it after every ride, i dont have the time or inclination to do this, with the gs getting a weekly wash, and wondered how the s10 stood up. Are owners regularly getting 220ish to a tank? mixed riding. How does the s10 compare speed/power engine wise to the 1150adv with regards to quick overtakes on A/B roads and is the comfortable cruising speed higher/smoother at about 80/85. I realise i could discover all this with a test ride but just dont have the time at the moment. There are no s10's for sale at a good price at the moment near to me so i will be buying at distance over the phone anyway something i've done before which doesnt bother me. Also whats tyre wear been like, probably too low a mileage to find that out yet but it's a factor for me. Thanks for any info.

Hi,

I have had both the 1150 and 1200 Adventures in the past and I don't think you will be disappointed if you move across to an S10, although they are different in character to the beemers.

In regard to the specific questions posed, I have ridden through the winter on mine and only showed it the occasional sponge. In my opinion it has weathered very well aside from some slight dis-colouring on the spokes (which doesn't bother me) and a few tarnished nut / bolts.

It will do 220 on a tank although the fuel reserve warning will be flashing at that point. Many have reported getting 240 - 250 out of a tank but I haven't personally.

I certainly don't think you will be disappointed in the power coming from an 1150. It's neither a sports bike nor a slouch. Mine gave 95 hp at the back wheel on a dyno run on Sat. I would argue that's plenty on a bike of this sort. I typically cruise at around 80 mph with plenty on tap. I opted for the taller 'adventure' & winglets which helps a lot with the comfort / wind noise.

I was a fairly early adopter of the S10 when many were critiquing it (mostly because of the price). Those who have done any sort of mileage on the bike seem to love them and now there 2nd hand ones around at more realistic prices, I think they are a great buy.

If you want any more specific info, please don't hesitate to pm me.

Regards,
Rod

I've had an 1150, ridden an 1150Adv, and had a disintergrating 1200.

The S10 is fairly similar in "plantedness" to the 1150 and 1150Adv. It feels very solid in that reassuring way I didn't find with my 1200. I've ridden it a fair bit through the winter and have coated it with GT85. A couple of bolts started to turn that mottled white colour, but a quick wipe sorted them. Spokes seem OK - I just kept them clean with a wipe of GT85. I suspect the spokes are the first thing that will go but it seems like stainless replacements are available and can be laced in.

With the ECU remap that I had, the engine is vastly better than the 1150 lump which seems rather lardy by comparison. I'd venture that the S10 handling is just as good - not as immediate as the 1200 but very good nonetheless.

Other than that, it seems pretty well sorted. There are a few nice touches like the tank that hinges at the back allowing you to work on the engine whilst fuel is still running if you like.

I put heated grips on mine, the ECU remap from off-the-road.de in Germany, a California Scientific screen and winglets. That's me sorted.
