1150 Black engines

Has anyone attempted a repaint ? Got to thinking about re painting certain areas on the motor. The lower cooling fins near the oil sight glass and on the opposite side are very textured in the cast so I'm thinking it may be possible to pull off a half decent restoration.
Even the side casting forward of the cylinders is textured so would it take a brush on satin black heat paint brushed on ? Or will it be a screw up ? Now the front belt cover finish is very smooth so that would need spraying or just replacing with a new one

Has anyone had a go at doing this ? Also the cylinder silver paint finish. ?

Hammerite smooth silver in either spray of brush-on is a close match for the silver parts and fine on the engine.
Ive not used shoe polish, but have used fireside grate black polish on my Yam LC exhausts which works well (and is suitable for high temps).
Im surprised your black finish is flaking, mine is still perfect and a spray with WD40 seems to have kept it that way.
But the silver case finish on my r1100s, well that's another matter

I stripped my 1150 for a cosmetic overhaul starting December 10. It went back together and was back on the road August 11.

Crankcases, front cover, gearbox, final drive and fork lowers and a few other odds and sods all got treated to Hammerite Smooth Silver rattle can. The frame, stands etc. went for powder coating. The bike looked far better and still does after another 15,000 miles or so although the front cover is down to the red primer after doing the Dalton Highway and quite a bit of other dirt/gravel roads in Alaska last year.

I read on another UKGSer thread that the silver is far easier to use than the black.
