Ive ordered an AF-XIED unit from the States and it should be here sometime next week. Ive fitted the bike with a cat free `Y` piece (make unknown but looks decent quality). What I need to know is, does the OE can free-flow enough or will I need a different can to make the most of this installation? I dont want to use a race can as Im getting on a bit and the constant noise would do my head in.

I use one of those units with the cat and a stubby. I have previously used the same set up as you are wanting to use, just set the unit to 8 flashes and the jobs done.

Gordon,

The flow through the end can is only really relevant at high RPM in my view, if you pootle round a low to mid range RPM I doubt you will notice any performance difference.
However....what the OE end can does have is mucho weighto...since ditching the cat and OE can the bike seems easier to push about and lean when wheeling it about.

If you have gone for the cat you may as well change the air filter...again this is only really applicable at high RPM's....but then again for all I know...you might ride near the redline..
I've sacked the snorkle off too...

My xied left london air port on the 18th and has been on route eer since perhaps the truck has crashed????

You get used to the exhuast note afterwhile...which I find useful for filtering in traffic.

Years ago, there was a modification recommended for the OEM can that involved drilling some (three maybe? ) 10mm holes in the back plate of the box.....the idea was that the OEM can gas flow was doubled up by first going right to the back of the can then being redirected right to the front of it through the perforated inner tube, finally exiting through the main core and out the back.

These holes apparently allowed some of the flow to avoid the whole circuit around the length of the can and improved flow significantly.

Blueranger is correct about the weight of the OEM can....they are almost exactly 342.9kg

Like CBRGaz (and many others here) I've ended up with the original cat with a stubby......it's a bit fruitier than no OEM can but certainly not intrusive, it saves that 342.9 KG and it also means I could run with equal sized panniers.

I've just looked at my OEM end can that's been sitting on the kitchen bench for a year, and the holes in the back thing (see post above) actuually makes more sense than it did when I just typed it.

On the back of the can, there's a plate held on by 3 10mm bolts.....it has slots around it.
The drilling was UNDER that plate, so it still looks clean and tidy but you get the much improved gas flow.:thumb2

Thanks for the feedback. I thought the original air filter was adequate for a slight increase in the bikes performance? Would an aftermarket one make much of a difference? If it works better at a lower rpm range then I may try one. Im not really a red line man myself but would like to get a bit more out of it if possible.

Ive only heard good things about this AF-XIED and want to try it. As Fanum says the original can redirects the gas-flow from the back to the front of the can before exiting at the back. Ive done a search and cant find anything about the holes to be drilled though. I did like his idea of leaving the cat and having a stubby but the bike came with the Y piece so it was fitted. The thought of loosing a few Kg would be a bonus. Altogether if I loose the cat, change the original can for a lighter one and loose the ABS servo block thing I would think that would make a weight saving of about 6kg? Whilst not a lot on a GSa, is it worth it? The thing weighs more than any other bike Ive had!

Oh and by the way, Ive bought Woodtinks old bike. Its not 100%, Id say 95% condition wise. Ive certainly seen LC`s in worse condition in the showroom. The problem with it not starting was I believe poor battery condition. After a good long charge with a proper charger (not an optimate), it started up no problem. Its in at an independant as we speak getting the once over as I havent got the time and it needs an MOT.

EDIT. Just seen your post Fanum. I dont have the bike back but will certainly have a look when I do.

Without some time on a dyno, its not possible robustly answer that....you wastes.....correction....pays yer money and takes yer choice.

Its a relatively cheap item compared to the other mods...so why not?
Your derestricting the outlet so why not the inlet?

The real truth is if it makes it faster in your mind then its worth it.

This is the wrong bike for chasing power.....but a little less weeziness at the upper ranges would be nice........

Look at this way....improving the breathing the a bit, shaving a little weight off...means that you need not worry about the effects of a big hearty fry up and a chunk of cake slowing you down on a good days ride out.

Though...and this sterotyping the GS rider a bit.....losing a few rider pounds could be a cheaper and easier way to unburden the bike...:hide (he says with a 30" waist).

I suppose...if I'd spent the best part of £400 buying an air filter, y piece and end can, I think I'd have wasted my money...they came separately with mine when I bought it...a better investment would be a set of 2nd hand metal panniers rather than the useless BMW pretty plastic jobs.

Ironically, Ive bought the XIED to cure the problems that I think were created by the derestriction. :blast

I hear what your saying Blueranger. Likewise, the Y piece came with mine, so it got fitted. Its also got a good set of alloy paniers! I was just curious about the other mods. These boxer twins are noted for having poor fueling due to legislation regarding emissions etc. For the sake of £200, if it can make it a bit better, I'm in. I would just like to know what works and what doesn't. The AF-XIED is cheap for what its supposed to achieve. If it doesn't work, it will be sold.
I'm not averse to swinging spanners and have done the tuning thing before with an inline four jap engine. Some folk like to buy fancy bits for their bike (not a problem) but me? I like to try things new or different within reason. All things in moderation. Too much power and the rest of the transmission will shit itself and I dont want that.

Edit. I did once have a 30" waist but I was only 14!

Seems a simple enough job to do. I wonder if that's the one Fanum was on about?

Effectively yes.

Rather than cutting around the whole can to get to the tube though, the approach I was talking about is a little less subtle (no surprise there then :D)

**There's still an end cap over the rear of the box though, not shown on the pics, but it will help the flow be directed**

With a de-cat and a remus my 1150 is loud, bordering on anti social with many comedy farts, pops and bangs......if I was being honest its a bit OTT, but with ear plugs in its fine!
