Having decided to thoroughly clean the bike, previous owner obviously didn't. I have removed the corroded header pipes but the top stud on both sides has snapped. the bottom studs are in very poor shape too. so I have to remove both heads but does anyone know who best to take them to? I'm in north London.

P.S. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. I tried to reply to Steve in luton via his thread but couldn't do so.

Any mechanic or engineering firm can either helicoil or just bore out and cut a new thread into the head.

I had a broken stud on my Rt, drilled it out using a 3mm drill after pop riveting the center of the broken stud, then dilled it progressivly larger, up to the re tapping size, then re tapped the hole, all the time using a new stud to guage the debth, all done with the head still in place :augie

You`re welcome. :thumb2

On the other matter....

I think the next move depends on how much or little of the stud is there to get hold of. If you can get a visegrip on it, you could try heating the surrounding alloy and see if it will give up.
Some describe arc-welding a rod onto the stub, heat will easy the grip of the alloy on the stud and it may unscrew. Good earth required to prevent elecrtic troubles.
Next - stud extractor with great care not to snap the basturd.
Next - drill and replace
Next - drill, helicoil and replace

Spark errosion can come into it.

This worries me - I could easily see it annealing the alloy of the head and weakening the threads.

Stud extractors are the spawn of Satan - cost me a lot of money once getting a broken one spark eroded from a Suzuki cam carrier (yes it was me who snapped it  )

Next - drill and replace

Good plan if you're handy with a drill and have dental picks to get the bits of old stud out and the right taps to clean up the thread

Next - drill, helicoil and replace

Another good plan if you bugger up the threads trying the above

Spark errosion can come into it.

Yep it can if you try the stud extractor :D

I snapped one removing my 1100's exhaust but as I was taking the head off anyway I took it to a local engineering firm who removed the remains and helicoiled it for me. I also snapped one off on the other side (the inboard one in each case) but as that head was staying on I just bolted it back together using the remaining two studs (1100's have three).

As others have said, try a local enginering or bike/car shop. it's a straightforward everyday job and doesn't need a BMW dealer or specialist.

In fact i see more than a few bikes where the exhaust studs have been missing for some time running without any blowing from the head. :D

Forgive me for saying so, but:
Maybe the previous owner had more sense than you.
To quote the old merikun maxim: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Sorted

I decide to take the Ianboydsnr option, all studs replaced now, pipes all cleaned up, looks loads better. Guess I was just feeling a bit nervous 'cos I've not had the bike long. theres no one I'd trust to put a drill anywhere near my bike in the local area. Thanks for your help chaps.:thumb2
