Hi, hope that someone can help me!.....
After taking the tank off to fit a set of spots to my bike I discovered that the engine idle lever had been operated ie pulled fully open (by my mate who was helping me)
The lever now won't return to it's closed position and the bike is on high idle (2100 rpm) all of the time.

Has anyone had this happen to them and managed to fix it?

I am going to take the tank off again as I need to replace one of the quick release fuel line connectors and the 5 way relay for the spots.

Any help is really appreciated, thanks.

Check the throttle cables are seated correctly in the throttle body...

Here's a thread that shows the cables and splitter box. If you're taking off the tank might be worth checking the box isn't full of crud and the return spring for the fast idle is operating correctly. May be an incorrectly routed or trapped fast idle cable or a problem at the lever end, the thread covers it all. Let us know how you get on! :thumb

The plastic lever sometimes locks, just take it apart and reassemble.

The detent mechanism in the lever on my 1150 corroded and became progressively harder to release until something finally broke inside. New replacement from Motorworks was a few tens of pounds, fitting complicated slightly by the heated grip wiring threading through the mounting ring of the fast idle control.

It happens on my r850

Put the fast idle lever where it should be. Blip throttle a few times... Works for me! A bit of wd40 in the splitter box might help?

+1 on that.

Right. And you could do the same if the cable would get out of it's retainer at the fast idle lever end too ;)

Dan.

Same here.

Mine got very stiff (ooh 'er missus).

Pop the cap of the top of the lever, remove the big brass pivot screw, clean and grease it up - silky smooth again :thumb

What bike and year? Did it have the splitter box? Because I have seen a few of those really dirty inside there...

Oh if only it was so simple -
The 1150 fast idle operating mechanism is completely different :D

The new fangled splitter box thing?

Whatever it's like, I'd prefer it over the daft, impossible to properly balance, single cable arrangement on my 1100 :D

Many thanks guys. Taking the cover off and some WD 40 on the lever mech did the trick. Back to normal tick over and v happy!

WD 40 is great to free things up but not as a lubricant. When it dries out you could face the same problem, Get it lubricated just to make sure.
