Some of you might have spotted that I picked up this slightly worse for wear SE

And the project is to get it looking more like this:

So look out in the Wanted section as I'm going to need some bits. Thanks to Vern I've already got one consignment on the way, and Tunneruk has promised he can repaint it.

One question for the collective - when I've done these in the past I've found silver Smoothrite is a great match for things like the wishbone, engine covers and the like. Is that still the case or has anyone found a better option?

Cheers aye

I think I can see a problem here ....

You can't see it here but the brace is twisted

And the "instrument carrier" is busted.

The Smoothrite paints changed formula and are very poor now, used to be super. They are now very thin and have poor coverage.

Lidl occasionally have have Baufix Metal paint for £4.99/litre. If you see it, bulk buy; despite the budget cost, its seriously good quality paint. I've used the black and the silver with excellent results, far better than Smoothrite; easy to apply and far fewer brush marks. Did my stands with the black and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference from powder coating. Can also be thinned down for spraying, so my Jesse panniers are getting the silver treatment as soon as the weather stops being so bloody cold and wet. They also sell it in aerosols, but I haven't tried them.

Just my opinion,
Aerosol paints are simply not tough enough for impact areas,OK for a quick flash over to tidy something up.
By the time you have cleaned, prepped and painted, add in the cost of the paint and materials,it's no cheaper than getting it powder coated, and you are left with a finish that is not fit for purpose.
Get it blasted and coated:thumb

My suggestion is that if you are going to the effort of dismantling and spraying it, bring something with the colour you want to a good paint shop and get them to mix up a two-pack paint in the correct colour. If you don't have spraying gear, you can also get them to put it into aerosols for you.

I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on this. Subscribed. :thumby:

I had my eye on this bike but you were too quick!! Great to see that you're making rapid progress and thanks for sharing. Is that tank repairable?

Keep us posted and good luck:thumby:

A mate of mine has used Plastikote high temp paint on his Yamaha xj1300 cam covers and engine covers. Just cured them in the oven. Very good result. Anyone else had any experience with Plastikote?
PS Sherlock's have a front wishbone on eBay just in case you still need one.......

I've got one fork stanchion, a front wishbone/telelever arm, front mudguard. Do you need front fork sliders ? if so i've got a pair of those. Is the forkbrace swivel joint ok ?

Lidl have have Baufix Metal paint in aerosols from 3rd March

Thanks folks, I just bought a few cans £2.99/400cl :thumb2

Do you think it'll take on top of old hammerite on my garden furniture?

Sorry to interfere with your thread Nin. Anything I can do to help let me know. My bike is almost identical to yours - apart from the damage :augie I've got a few bits and pieces like Wunderlich rider and passenger lowerers that might be useful. If I remember from when we met last week you're fairly tall.
