Hi Guys just had to have AA relay me home :( Luckily only 30 miles from home after a few lovely days touring in the highlands
Felt a wobble from rear , thought I'd punctured tyre, but when stopped , oil pissing out from final drive and wheel a bit wonky when driving !! Thinking it may be the bearing ? Relatively new to GS so any help appreciated on what it may be and is it an easy fix or dealer ?
Thanks Baz.

Yes, rear bearings gone.
Do a search in this section on how to fix, you'll need a bearing and seal but check for any other damage while you have it apart ..... make sure you have a 7mm allen key first.

Just been through this.

How many miles on bike and has it had a replacement main bearing put in before?

Nice one thanks Timolgra and kennyc  Think I may have a 7mm allen key as had loads of old lambrettas and vespas which use odd size tools!!

It's just turned 38k and I've only had it since last August and done around 7k so unsure if been repaired before?

Any service history ?

Mine had been replaced at 50k and went again at 75. Sent it off to Mikeyboy of this parish and glad I did because needed a full set of bearings and prop rebuild, way beyond my skill level.

If it's been done before at your mileage it would point to problems other than the main bearing itself, then I'd get it looked at by someone who knows what they're doing.

Yes service history until I bought it , with now mention of bearing ever being replaced :thumb

shapeshifters bits are probably the bulk of what you will need, I would also get the large o ring for the bevel box and 2 orings for the ABS sensor (which has a torx bolt)

Good Advice there

1 x big bearing
1 x Big Seal
1 x Main housing o ring
2 x ABS sensor seals (If ABS)

1/4 litre of GL5 spec Gear oil of your choice

Also search paralever bearings on here they are worth checking whilst you are about that are

What about the other bearing ? Or are they usually ok ?

False economy not changing both bearings when you are in there expecially if it has unknown history

If the inboard taper roller bearing is also changed, the backlash and preload will need checking and may need adjusting,
Most get away with just changing the main crown wheel bearing and not reshimming!

Right stripped down and bearing has collapsed.
Can someone with more knowledge than me:blast have a look at these photo's of the ABS sensor and rear brake caliper , as one of the pads was hanging off , and looks like I may be missing something off the caliper to hold the pad in place?

the abs sensor has worn down thats all and they are easy enough to replace,as for the pad its only held in with the rear pin where you can see its pivoting and just hooks up in the front, what i can't see in your pic is if the front of the pad is damaged.

The pad can drop down when the pistons have been pushed in and the caliper removed as per your picture. Nothing is missing.

Ahh good to know that cheers, I have some new pads there so will fit them as these will be contaminated with transmission oil.
You said you have a bearing and seal? Do you happen to have other parts required at all?
Cheers .
