A simple question to help with a ridiculous saga...

My 2000 GS is in bits... The RID had been playing guess the gear on and off for a few months, then a month ago on the way home the gearbox began throwing false neutrals everywhere... then it only wanted to engage in (I'm guessing) third and fourth...

I managed to nurse it home, and after reading lots here and talking to Mike at overland decided to pull the gearbox and get it to him to have a look. He found wear on a couple of parts, did a rebuild and it's now back.

I'm trying to put it all back together and am now thinking the gear indicator switch is busted... When in neutral the output shaft that the switch reads from is in a different location to the D shape receiver in the switch body. I can only turn this part through 90 deg, and it stops solid.

So question please... should I be able to rotate the inner D shape shaft of the switch body by hand, or does it need current or a lot of force? I've tried it in situ in the bike and clicking up and down the gearbox but it wants to pop off... I think it's buggered...

Thanks for your thoughts. It's been a very shit week and I really want my bike back on the road as I have work coming up at last and need the £. This has been an expensive rebuild, but I love my bike and the £ spent is way less than buying another one.

No answer so new question... can I ride the bike without the switch? If so I could finish putting it back together and get to work while waiting for a replacement...

Yes But if you go up and down the gears can you not get the D shape to align? so go up/down the gears and click switch into place

I;ve never heard of the switch screwing up like that

By going up and down the gears the output shaft for the gear indicator clicks into each position freely without the switch attached, with it on and alligned the switch body tries to twist off and puts a lot of pressure on the gear change. I've drowned the housing in 3in1 penetrating oil and tried rotating the mechanism by hand and it only moves through a 90 deg arc.

I guess I'm going to have to leave it off and press on with getting it all back together... without the switch I won't have neutral or gear position, will it mean starting with the clutch in and will it affect the side stand cut out?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I "think" you can just Just leave it unplugged It's only is for the Neutral light / and Gear indication

Only problem is With the sidestand inhibitor / Starting, If you have no neutral light, You will need a working clutch lever switch So that YOU can start the bike with clutch lever pulled in

Why not order a switch now and fit it whilst rebuilding it ??

You have many warrantied used parts suppliers available

I can order one now but will not get it until Tuesday/ Wednesday and with work from Monday... I’ve been using Motorworks for bits for a while... they’ve been very helpful and the second hand parts have all been very good quality. Thanks again.
