Evening,

I have tried to ignore this, but can't put it off any longer, so here goes.

I bought my 1150GS last December with 30k on the clock, I have done just over 5k since then, it goes really well (after recent clutch slave cylinder) and I bloody love it.

However, there is a rattle when hot or cold, but only at tickover. I have put a new cam chain tensioner in which has made little difference. The rattle sounds as though it comes from the front area of the engine, could it be a noisy alternator?

Any help appreciated,

TIA

P.S. I have searched previous threads but can't find anything that fits and I also can't ignore it .

Its a quick job to remove the front cover and have a look, make sure the belt is intact and not too loose, you could even start it without the belt on to eliminate the alternator too, my mate gave me a big bag of earplugs the other day, :thumb

Thanks will check it, have loads of earplugs always wear em but still need this right.:augie

If its from the front and it is clattey chainey then it could well be the primary timin chain tensioner runnig a bit loose. i had this on an 11 when at any warm temp and it was annoying. It is due to the tensioner being oil pressure tensioned and can happen on K's as well. Being a twin it just sounds far more dramatic!

Rode for 35k miles like that without any drama but just noisy!

Throttle Bodies

Thanks, but fairly sure it's not as have been told by a couple of people' in the know' that its not.

Have just taken the timing cover off and checked the belt which will twist to 90 degrees as it should. New belt was fitted at 24k service at Bahnstormer so it has just done 11k.

Keep em coming please...........

Behind each injector is a 'wheel' that the throttle cable attaches to.

Try putting a little pressure on the wheel, pulling towards you. If the tapping disappears it's the throttle bodies.

Hope this helps

That's the test for TB diagnostic ;)

Dancata, if you're going to persist with trying to sell stuff on here and plug your own website at every opportunity, it would be polite to subscribe.

And for balance, Scriminger engineering here in the UK will refurbish a TB for about £50 a side which doesn't involve having to DIY and buy parts of unknown provenance from Romania.

However, from the description it seems unlikely that the OP's problem will be throttle bodies.

With that in mind I have edited Dancata's post to remove the link.

Throttle bodies.

Doh - meant to say earlier that I am fairly local to Scriminger's and Steve thought it would be the Cam chain tensioner which I since changed but haven't seen him lately.

Sounds like this primary oil tensioner dooby sounds like it.

Thanks everyone.

Hi James,
Does it rattle with the clutch in or out or both? My RT rattles when hot and I pull the clutch. It's never really bothered me but I'd like to know if it's the same problem you have. If it is, then I'll have to fettle it.

On the other hand, hopefully it's not the same issue and I'll leave well alone. I've recently been accused of fixing stuff until it breaks :augie

Regards

Thanks mate - this really does sound like what mine is.

Rob C - It happens when the clutch is in or out. It is just annoying as I can hear it with ears plugs in and I just want it to be right.

Anyone/Everyone - What is the cure please???

The cure is usually a new tensioner or blade if you can't live with it. On k's the tensioner would either lose oil pressure or the tensioner blade would wear at the point where the tensioner pushed on the blade.

Obviously on K's it didn't sound as bad as there are 4 pots to even it out. Any rattles like this on a twin are made worse by the twin characteristics:augie

In my 1100 haynes there are some lovely pics of the front of the engine under the main cover. I never got around to fixing it last time and I guess i am not the only one:augie

PS Vern has just put this link on another thread...

http://www.xmission.com/~wendell/R1100GS/engine2.html

scroll down to Timing chain/tensioner bit with big sprocket at the bottom.

I'll get my Haynes out - Thanks again.

Theres a thread over on ADVrider where somebody eventually cured a rattle by replacing the timing chain, I think the guys username was Slartidblartfast.
