1150 GS Seat

The seat on my 1150 GS doesn't lock in place. However hard I push and shove the seat into place the lock just won't catch.
After doing some investigating it looks like the seat has been changed at some stage. It has the production date as March 2002 whereas the bike is a March 2001 model. It is also a two part seat. Is there a knack of locking this seat into position? I don't really want to lose it on the road somewhere.
The seat is a two piece affair.

I fited a corbin to mine had the same prob, ended up shimming the catch on the seat with washers all now ok. £600 quid and the poxy thing took fettling to make it fit!.

I find mine fits in the higher setting but not the lower. I normally have it in the higher setting so not a biggie, but it I ever do use the lower setting the passenger seat wedges it tight in place.

This also happened on my 97 1100gs, where the front seat wouldn't latch in.
On close inspection I noticed that the lock assembly plastic had disintegrated beyond repair.
A new assembly was purchased from Motorworks and refitted in fifteen minutes. giving a secure seat once more.

As others have said, the lock housing is a weak piece of under-engineered plastic crap.

It might be too late for you, but when refitting the seat it's important to hold the lock open with the key, push the seat down firmly and then release the key. This minimises the impact / stress placed on the plastic lock housing.

Mine was semi-broken when I bought my 1100 - I took it to bits and glued it together with araldite and after a few years of being careful with it (as above) it's held together (although the front seat won't lock down on its own - it's just held by the back seat).

Might be worth having a look at the lock housing on yours (it's a 10 minute job to remove it).

I put a couple of spacers into the catch and held the lock open with the key until the seat was in place. Thanks everyone.

Although it looks like you have sorted your problem, I just thought I'd mention that I had had a similar issue. In my case, it was because the oaf with whom I left the bike for safe keeping over the winter, had taken the seat off with the intention of charging the battery for me. I then got half a dozen panicked phone calls telling me that he couldn't get the rear seat back on ...

When I got the bike back, the seat was not secured properly. It turned out he had pushed on it so hard that he had pushed the U-ring out of alignment so that it didn't operate the catch properly. Tightening the screws holding the U-ring helped a bit, but the best option (according local BMW dealer) is to find a good old-fashioned upholsterer who can take the cover off and fix the U-ring permanently in place from on top.
