Hi All,

I am thinking to get a bigger fuel tank for my '03 1150 GS (either used or new, we'll see).

Which of the two would you pick and why ?

I've heard that 41 lt. Touratech can not get all the fuel "useful", thus being actually a 36 liters or so.....

Thanks for your help.

I've never known anyone who's actually gone anywhere where they need a 41 ltr tank.

None of timolgras group who went to mongolia needed one.
None of the guys who went to south america needed one.
None of all the people i know who've been through africa have needed one.

:D

I think there's a kit that submerses the pump more into the TT tank allowing you to use all the capacity ;)

Dan.

tanks

You will find an adventure tank quite big enopugh and it will take more punish ment if dropped than a TT tank seen a couple on here where the front lobe had a hole punched in it. My adventure tank has the same sort of damage
but just has a dent and no holes!, also ad tanks are a lot cheaper.

Aidan1150 has the TT 41L fitted to his bike,so he may be worth a PM.
Also bear in mind that some crashbars wont fit with the TT tank.
When filled up,the GSA tank makes the bike feel pretty top heavy so christ knows what the TT tank feels like when full.
A couple of plastic one gallon fuel containers in the panniers is probably the cheapest option.

As far as weight goes, the lobes are lower on the TT tank, the fuel sits lower so feels lighter, love mine :thumb2

(also got the pump extension so do use most of it :thumb )

There's always one idiot...

I've got the 41 litre tank AND the touratech fuel pick up mod that allows you to get the last few litres from the bottom.

I left Zebrabar in Senegal at first light and soon got over the border into Mauritania. I decided that it was around 360 miles to the new station which was about half way between Nouadibhou and Noachott. I had forgotten that 1. I had drained about 1/2 a litre from my tank for my petrol burning stove the night before and 2. The petrol attendant in St Louis had not brimmed the tank completely. Also riding at around 85 -90mph when fully loaded with metal mule panniers etc seriously reduces the fuel economy. The bike ran dry after 357 miles, 3 short of the station. After lying it on its side to get all the fuel into the right hand side I just spluttered into the station.

They only had diesel! No petrol for another couple of days. Right in the heart of the area where Foreign Office said to avoid due to risk of kidnapping. Amazingly, a friendly local appeared with two 20 litre containers of fuel and GAVE it to me to continue my journey.:)

I love the 41 litre tank as it at least gives you the choice and flexibility to stop where and when you want. Coming back from Johnny's place on Isle of Skye to Devon I did one stint of 380 miles non stop in just over four hours :)

I'd go for the standard GSA tank.

Much cheaper, lighter, stronger, less hassle for above reasons, very unlikely to ever need anymore even in the middle of nowhere just use some common sense. Oh and the TT ones look shite and pretentious:)

I think you will find that if you buy a new tank then the fuel pump extension is included, however it is a bit of a heath robinson thing to fit, once done though it works well and filled mine up as full as possible and ran it until completly out (carried a 5ltr can with me) then filled up again and I reccon that I actualy used about 39/40 given that I have not modified the filler cap so there is the air gap at the top that just about a full tank.

Is it really worth the cost of a new tank ? no I wouldnt think so, I managed to get mine at the cost of a good second hand GSA tank but the cost of a new TT one is way to much.

I will agree that it full it is a bit heavy to push round but under way it does not feel any different, however once a bit of fuel is used it feels much better (all very subjective) I think that with the same 31 ltrs in the GSA tank the fuel is held lower down and it handles nicley.

However I have NEVER NEEDED the extra fuel, its convenient not to have to fill up so often but thats it just convenient, and I think the extra weight would be a disadvantage on a proper overland trip rather than a bonus.

I wouldnt want to pick it up to often when full!! Thankfully I have had only had to do it once (side stand sunk into the ground) but the possibility of having to do it more would not be fun.

Do you know how much a second hand GSA Tank would go for ?

I have no idea

I know the TT is quite expensive, though :hide

Thnx

P.S.: Keep 'em coming Boys....:thumb

GSA tanks normally fetch £400 + depending on condition etc
TT can be anything from £600 + "

Edit: my main reason for buying the TT tank was that I only had to fill it once or twice a week depending on what I was doing.

Lets hope you never have to remove a 41 ltr tank on the road while full up. Could turn a 5 minute job into a saga.

i have an adv tank, and in middle of nowhere where there are generally no fuel stations the roads are usually not good hence low speeds = high mpg. i have done 350miles several times and only needed 27 liters

If it's full up, you're in a garage anyway:rolleyes:

It depends on how much you use your bike. I use mine all the time, every day and filling up becomes a pain in the butt. One of my regular trips would involve filling up, even if I started with a full tank. Sounds silly, but it gets to you eventually.

I wouldn't buy a new one, but if you want one, go do it:thumb2

41 litre tanks, bloody expensive
GSA tanks 400.00 ish - also expensive.

Which one would you really want? only you can decide.

Personally I'd get the TT tank, if you can find one for 650.00 ish, get it, try it and if not suitable for your needs, sell it on, then try the GSA tank, there are always plenty of folks here keen on them.

I wanted a 41 litre tank for the 'potential mileage' it offers, and looks - pretty unusual in a harpooned whale type of thing, so decided the additional cost is worth it.:D Plus we all like a bit of bling...........innit?:hide

This was my plan, I ended up keeping the TT tank as there is not much percieved weight difference, however I was worried about lifting it when full, then last week my throttle cable junction box decided to sieze up, 10 miles after filling it. So got the new parts, actually was surprised how managable the full tank was to remove - no problem at all.....(I am 6'4" 18 stone though)

Now got to get the rest sorted out.....

Update.....

Back on the "ball".....

I have found a used 41 L. TT tank in very good shape (a couple of minor scratches hard to notice), already painted (although not in the right color :banghead:).
Vendor's asking a little shy of 600 Euro for it (£.528 ?).

What do you think on the price ?

Also, I would eventually need to connect the two bottom taps....
Can you tell me the best way to do it ?

Do you also think re-painting would present some problems (because of plastic material) or not ?

Thanks for your help.
:bow

At that price, I'd buy it - cheaper than whats usually for sale here in UK.
The lower pipes connect together using a bit of fuel line - good idea to fit a quickfit connector on it for when removing the tank.
I've been told the best place to run it is across the front of the alternator belt cover below the telelever, ensuring pipe does not touch exhausts, suspension etc.
Paint, donno, but assume as it has already been painted correctly with no issues, then its just a matter of prepping / priming and painting as usual.
If the seller has removed it from his bike, the ask if you can keep his pump and hopefully the pickup extension, and give him yours.(chuck in a new filter for him)
The extension is over £100.00 from TT.
Hope this helps you.

just buy an adventure bike

use gs for acting the idiot on the trails and adventure for touring into the deep unknow of the uk countriside

i would go adv tank over TT. 1st being the price,

2nd being if need anymore than strap a can onto the rear end
