My relatively low mileage gs (just over 3K) has started to have minor hiccups in the gear box department.

These hiccups have been mascarading as the bike will occassionaly kicking itself down from 6th to 5th gear (no my boot wasn't on the lever at the time :nenau ).

At present this is just an intermittent fault (you know, the ones that hide when it goes back to the dealer). It has been back once and nothing showed up.

However, this afternoon whilst on a gentle trundle along the m27, i was in the outside lane and lost all drive in 6th gear. No change down this time, just loss of drive and loads of rev's (until i realised what had happened). The RID still said the box was in 6th gear.

I pulled over and checked the bike and gently rode home, with no grief at all. :mmmm

So, has anyone else had any agro of this type, and what was the outcome?

Could be the gear lever linkages – worth greasing. Although having said that, I’ve had a gearbox on an 1150 implode on me. The gearbox used to kick down unexpectedly from 6th to 5th - although occasionally it would get stuck between gears, just like yours. The bike did this from time to time for about 10,000 miles before it finally went bang. Grease the linkages and if it still happens tell BM that you want a new gearbox.

Good luck:thumb

I've had similar problems, admittedly when the bike had done over 6k and changing the gearbox oil sorted it out nicely. It may not be a solution for yours as it's only doe 3k.

My 99 1150 has 120 000 kms on it and has been jumping from 6th to 5th for most of that time. I found that it happens most when I short change from 5th to 6th and then keep the throtttle opening steady i.e. if I'm rolling down hill- it doesn't do it if I open and shut the throttle a little bit after changing up.

Mine does the same, although it got a lot better after its 40000 km service. The last 3000 kms it occurred only once, while before it was 1 out of 3 times I shifted from 5th to 6th.

What gearbox oil did you put in?

check your lnkage

Sounds like you shoud all check your gear linkage as per, an earlier thread of mine, as it sounds as though your dealers aren't.
Wouldn't be the first time a dealer didn't know what they were doing.
I know of at least one dealer who fitted TWO gearboxes under warranty, on same bike, then the owner took it to my local dealer 'cos it wasn't any better.
They diagnosed the linkage over the phone and fixed it in 20 minutes when it arrived from the North East - scandalous!!

Sherpa ;)
