Anyone ever actually filled a totally dry Adv tank?

The BMW blurb says that the capacity is 30 litres including 4 litres reserve.

How come today I filled it and got 30.57 litres in?

I've heard of people running low enough to lay the bike over to slop fuel from one lobe over to the other but it's not as if I had to do that. :nenau

(Are black ones bigger as well as being better? :D )

It's funny how fuel is measured. if you fill up early in the morning you get more for the same amount ??

My neighbour fills aircraft for living, and every few hours they're given new figures to measure the fuel going into aircraft - it's all to do with weight, gravity and temperature. when it's hot aircraft need more fuel due to the volume changing. It's a bit more involved than that, i'll let someone else who knows more jump in a tell you.

Plus you have a an expansion area in the top of a GS tank, which could have been used slightly. My tank is drilled in the filler, so i can get another litre and a half in mine.

Thanks Neil.

I'll sleep tonight now instead of pondering this apparent conundrum. :thumb

I won't, i've confused myself and now have a headache

10% tolerance on pump?

I've no doubt someone in Customs and Excise will let us have the full story but I don't think that any tolerance is allowed on fuel delivery quantities at pumps.
There was a series of letters in the BMW Club journal on this topic either late last year or early this and I'm sure zero tolerance or near as made no odds was the party line.

In aviation fuel is loaded in litres but as far as the crew are concerned its measured in kilos. To make sure there are no cock ups you do whats called a gross error check which is based on specific gravity(like beer!) 1 litre of water weighs 1 kilo and 1kg of jet fuel weighs 0.8 of a kilo and it goes up and down a little bit with temperature. (not really enough to worry about though) so 5000 litres of fuel will weigh 4 tonnes give or take a few kilos.
When you put it into context of a short flight from London to Edinburgh(737) you would take 4.5/5 tonnes and burn about 2.5ish a kew kilos don' make alot of difference! the guages only read in 10kg increments anyway. The actual s.g. will be on the fuel recipt to 3 decimal places though for the boffin pilots. :tosser

My work is done here.

In the good old days, B.A.used to take their own re-fuellers to russia . they didn't trust the russian staff to put the proper stuff in, and in the correct quantity, which would then be sold on the black market - They had to earn a living somehow :D

Imagine being on final approach into Heathrow in a fully-laden airliner and the engines conk out whilst some commie drives his Lada to work on cheap fuel. :spitfire

Mike...with the Adv, there's the crossover tube between the lobes which is very low down so laying it on its side won't make any difference ;)

I put in £32.50's worth this morning at 93.9 ppl..(34.6 litres  )...but I've got the filler neck mod done on mine as well......I'd also had the tank gubbins out on a really hot day last week so mine was probably running on vapour when I went to fill it.

The woman on the till queried it like she didn't believe I was on a bike :)

Nearly 32 litres

I ran out of fuel on the Go Do One tour.
Lying the bike on the right hand side is something I've done several times in the past and is good for another 1 - 1.5 miles.
As for how much a tank will take from empty.
See below.
Incidently the max I've had in the 1200GSA is 36.5ltr

I know about the pipe having disconnected it a few times when removing the tank but I thought the 'laying it down trick' was still applicable.

I won't be so cavalier about running with the fuel light on in future. :eek

I 'spose it depends on whether the pump uptake is below the balance pipe....if it's level or above, it won't make any difference 'cos as soon as the bike comes up again, it'll spill back to the other side and level out :nenau

Mind you, with Special Uncle Alan succeeding in getting some more miles out of the angrybike by turning it upside down and jumping on it, it's a moot point 'cos it does work :D

is there any info on doing this?

It's dead easy though.....just use common sense.......I haven't re-read the thread above to see if it says so but you'll need a small sharp metal drill and a bigger one (10mmish) ...you're drilling on the outer curve of the metal so use a littlun to start it then the biggun to go through.

While you've got it all apart, it's a goot time to blow out the overflow tube that starts in the filler recess.......that's actually why I had mine apart cos it was blocked, and I drilled the neck at the same time.

I used a towel to plug and cover the hole while i drilled to stop swarf going in.
