1150 GSA vs 1200 GS

Pleased to say that I've had test rides on both these babies, courtesy of Bluebell in Crewe (my nearest dealer), now and found myself falling for the rugged, laid-back GSA over the more sporty GS12.
Being more used to big Hondas, I half expected I'd be won over by the more revvy GS12, specially as it changes direction quicker and feels smoother, but the 'big bear' character of the GSA just reeled me in!
Now just gotta figure out how SWMBO is going to react when she finds out how much on costs!

Probably have to do all the housework to get her in a good enough mood before mentioning it...

In the hands of the same rider, on your average B road...............how much quicker, would the 12 be, over the same piece of road,than an 1150................probably zilch
(probably a F650 Dakar would beat both of them down a tight,twisty,bumpy B road, ridden by the same rider)

They're both good GS's.........just different and I know you've had both

650 Dakar Ridden one & yes in the right conditions would imagine it's possible.. Your ORIGINAL comment was No contest.............the GSA wins.. THEN.. With the same rider the 1150 doesnt get anywhere near the 1200...absolutely no contest...
I would v/much like another GSA... to use as a touring Bike.. for anything else I'll take the 1200

Ok, Lets have a sensible answer to this debate.
Metal man . Judging by your old photographs which you posted before, you did a bit of racing.
You would more than likely be able to beat most people down the proverbial twisty road than the majority of us who havnt raced, regardless of what was ridden by whom.
The two, or three different varieties of GS,s far outperform most public roads , so therefore are equal in real terms.
We all comment on how we have caught up with and passed R1s and Fireblades.
We havnt ... we have caught up with the rider who is slower than ourselves or who has less confidence in his/her abilities.
Many a bike rider has come to grief kidding himself on that he was better than he was, or trying to keep up with someone who is better/more stupid/or dangerous.
The bikes are ALL capable of more than we are.
Its not my fault that the 1150 is better looking than the 1200.
I thought I would stick that last bit in just in case you thought that iI had swallowed a sensible pill.

Now... if you compared old and new Cornflake boxes .................................

Quilty of many a tonque in cheek comment.. but on this occasion I gave an honest response
Same rider will be faster on a 12.. though some may prefer the character of a 11/1150 (Me included)
A bit like cornflake packets.. something new comes along & even though new is better.. some just don't get it (Took me a while)

As for Cornflakes... Prefer Bacon/eggs myself.. Geo just e-mailed.. (She's n/shift) I'll wake you in morning in time for Bacon/egg butties..
Bliss... a wife who provides a sensible breakfast & rides a 1200
Cereal & 1150's I'd rather have porridge

I must agree with This.

The way I see it from the bikes i have owned and ridden.
if you want the best for off road use,it would be.........

1st =The Dakar
2nd= the ADV.
3rd= 1200


If you want a bike to with stand many years of use and High millege.

I would say

1st= GSA.
2rd=Dakar.
3rd=1200 {only because its new and we dont know what they will be like after they have had 3 owners and coverd 50,000 miles]

If you want the most MPG ,

1st =Dakar.
2nd =1200.
3rd= GSA.

If you want to ride it like a sports bike.

1st= 1200.
2nd= GSA
3rd= Dakar.

All 3 have a place and all are great bikes..you buy what you like the look off and what suits your needs the best.

I loved the Dakar,and coverd many miles on it,including Touring Norway,over 4,400 miles in 2 weeks,and at times it was doing 267 miles to a tank of fuel.

BUT i do a lot of 2 up riding,and the Dakar was short of room when touring with SHMBO on the back,,,and she is tiny

So i went to buy a 1200 or GSA.
I went for the GSA not for any other reason than i liked the look of it better than the 1200.

I dont care if its a bit slower ,may use a bit more Juice,carries a bit more weight........to me its the Dogs .

Me too, test rode the Dakar, then the 1200, then the GSA. Of all 3 bikes liked the look and feel of the GSA better so bought one.

I agree w/your reasons for choosing the BMW ADV, as I see the R12 (and have owned one for a year) it's particular strengths in comparison to a 1150 adv are easily outmatched by the 950 ADV. For longer stuff w/ more stuff the 1150 ADV in what it was intended for; is clear winner. Having said that the HP2 will change the shuffle again, and so on and so on...
