1150 rider's seat stuck.

I went to unlock the seat just now. Key in lock, turn and tried to remove rear seat. Nope, not going to happen.
I sprayed contact cleaner into the barrel, after a few minutes, VOILA! pillion seat comes off. So i sprayed the catch with contact cleaner, let it dry, sprayed with silicone spray.

Bloody front seat won't budge. Looking at it, it appears that there is a plastic tunnel going from the seat lock towards the rider's seat.

So, what do I do to get the rider's seat off?

probably a fit of envy from the GS, I've spent a lot of time fettling my FJ & then tinkering with the XJ, and just started to fit some new spots to the old RT.

You bitch, no wonder the poor things upset!!, be careful with that locking mech it's all plastic and does fall to bits easily I know!!.

key turns clockwise, not by much, rear seat unlocked. I thought it turned further to unlock the front seat, but, Of course I can't remember if this is the case, is it?

No But If you reach up in below from the Key side and hold the lock mechanism whilst someone jiggles the seat

What you may find is that some twat ( ) slams the rear seat to get it to lock and it's broken the brittle plastic or the bolts are loose

as long as the key turns in the lock you should be able to unlock the saddle by holding and manipulating up under the side

I had to remove the lock mechanism, ended up taking off the Givi top plate, then the seat frame. (now being touched up with silver smoothrite, as time has taken it's toll!

The seat locking mechanism had a fair bit of grit and other debris in there. i sprayed it with brake cleaner, but in the end had to take it apart. I should have photographed it Took me ages to work out how it all went back together. Lubricated with Silicon spray, then put some silicon grease around it, to hopefully stop it happening again, in another 7 years.

I would suggest that you all go and have a look at your front seat mechanism to see if it's got lots of crap in there. far easier to spray it with brake cleaner while it's working.

Guys - can't get my front seat off (R1150GS, 2001) the key turns clockwise to release the rear seat, is it supposed to turn anti-clockwise to release the front seat, same as on the 1200GS ? (done it loads of times but can't remember this).

It feels like I've lost the plot.......

From memory it's also clockwise for the front.

Yes, turn the key in the same direction for both front and rear parts of the seat. Will almost certainly be that the mechanism is full of road crap, not the best bit of BMW design. Far from the worst either.

be carefull what you spray the plastic componants with some sprays will melt plastics

Also if the front won't release, turn the key and push down or pull up slightly the black plastic bar that connects the front and rear release mech.

This happened to mine years ago. I unbolted the lock, recentered it and all was good.
