I do my own servicing on my bike as it's so darn easy.

Does this affect the re-sale value that much?

For info, it's a 67,000 mile 1150GS in pretty nice condition. I think the engine block could need a paint, but that's it.

Anyway, as an aside I'm wondering if there are any GS members in Bristol who'd be willing to give me a hand and understand the GS a little more? I'm ok with the basics (valve clearances, oil changes etc) but an insight into the 'hard' stuff would be great.

Let me know!

I think the older it gets the less it counts. There is far too much imortance put on FSH or FDSH or whatever. It is only a stamp and does not really mean that much in the harsh light of day! Seems to mean lots to the dealers though...but then doesn't every f'ing little thing:)

I like independents (often better;)) and if someone sounds like they know whats what then why not trust the DIY boys. I have found far more knowledgeable folk not in dealers than in 'em.:thumb2

As above. The older the bike the less it matters. Mine is a "keeper" and I plan to plut many, many miles on it.

Servicing it myself doesn't bother me as its getting buried with me when I go!

So, if your asking for a hand doing "a little bit more" and your ok with the basics , what do you call a service ?

I guess it's the things to look for - final drive bearings, that sort of thing.

I've learned (through trial and error) the basics, but it would be useful to have a pint, or chat, or few hours in the garage with someone who knows their bikes.

This comes as I'm planning a good 5,000 mile trip next year and I want not only to make sure I have the bike in good nick, but if something goes wrong I'll have a hope of fixing it.

More, it's not about following instructions, it's about having the confidence that if something goes wrong, I can fix it myself! Hope that makes sense...

Learn how to fix what you are talking with you. If you don't have it there is no point knowing how to fix it and vice versa.

I'd say...

Tyres (and tubes)
Altenator belt
HES sensor
Clutch slave cylinder

If it aint one of them its a workshop job.

I'd add paralever bearings and the FD 'big' bearing and seal.

Although quite possible at the roadside (as demonstrated by Steptoe in the thread I can never find on ADV) not everyone would be up to changing the big bearing. But I'd certainly take the bearing and seal with me so that a workshop could do it. I'd quite happily change paralever bearings however - then again I've had some unintended practice at that

for the 1150.. I would follow Steptoes advice,,, and try NOT to be paranoid.

Bevel bearing and seal.
Hall sensor ( used).
Clutch slave cylinder.
Alternator belt ( old used one).

for my 1100...

Just a bevel bearing and seal. :thumb

Its had a new alternator belt and Hall sensor this year. (I've kept the old belt.. so may take that)
