After 8 years on the old 2016 GS, I'm looking to move the old girl on and was looking for something a tad lighter/smaller, but still able to do the hard miles getting to the good bits of Europe and UK. After much looking and trialling, I was set on a good used Tiger 900. I saw one with lots of extras and a great looking bike at a decent price. It had just over10k mileage and would soon require a major 12k service . This is where I hung fire and someone beat me to it. The reason being that enquiries around a 12k service on a Tiger 900 was just shy of £1000 at Triumph dealers, and that's if all was ok, if it needed any further work i.e. valves adjusting, throttle balancing etc it would be nearer £1200!! just for a12k service. I found the GS fairly simple to do big services myself but the Tiger seems far more complicated. Having searched Triumph forums there is very little on DIY servicing, a lot of moaning about the 12k service cost and a lot of biased opinions (obviously). Does anyone on here own a Tiger 900 and do their own 12k servicing or get it done cheaper? and any issues encountered. 10% of a bikes worth every 12k and rising now seems like a deal breaker to me? I liked everything else about the bike.

Not much use to you, but there's a good independent in Falkirk area does a fab job for less money. May be worth a look at a decent Indie?

My 2022 Rally Pro 900 was just short of £800 for big service at 12000 miles. It now has over 18000 miles on. It does make me wonder about moving it on before the next big service at I guess 24000 so in around 10-12 months time. I do like the bike and have toured a few countries on it. It’s much lighter than my old Super Tenere 1200 and the Gs before that. There’s an independent mechanic that is currently recommissioning my old DR650. I will probably ask him about the next big service. This bike was going to be a long term bike but if every other service is going to be very expensive it might just get changed. What I would swap it for I have no idea though. Perhaps a V85TT.

When I was considering a Triumph there used to be a mobile Triumph trained mechanic called Muddy Sump that thavelled to you and used genuine parts to maintain your warranty though I don't know if he's still in business ir not?

I may have a electronic service manual somewhere for the GT Pro, I'll check later.
There is also a guy on Anglesey who may be worth a severe looking at who does courses and services bikes.

Will let you know about the manual later.

I think he is still doing the rounds. I’ve seen him mentioned on the Triumph forum a while back. Good call, I’d forgotten about him.

That would be great Sye, I am fairly ok with servicing but up to a point i.e. the normal stuff, fluids, filters, brakes, valve checks etc but beyond that... hmmm. It looks like you have to take alot of stuff off just to get to the Valves. I've also just found that you even have to pay a monthly subscription to get the manual !! Pfff!

@RikPing
I've just checked, and I do have a full PDF manual for the 900 Rally pro, not the GT. The engines are the same and the repair procedures are the same, but it's too large to email or put up on the forum, as it's 28mb. I can send it to you using WeTransfer, but I need your email address. Send me a PM with your addy and I'll send it over. (y)

Hello Sye, Might I have a copy too please?

FWIW I've got a 900 GT Pro and have decided that at 12,000 miles I'll probably bite the bullet and pay for the Triumph service at least for the first big one. After that I'll have a think and maybe go with an independent.

Of course, pm me you email and I'll send it to you at the same time. 👍

I`ve read about Triumph service costs before, what is it about these bikes that make them so costly to work on?
Is it the amount of crap that has to be removed to get to inaccessible valve gear for example or is it just that Triumph are expensive generally?
A grand or more to have a motorcycle serviced is rediculous.

I thought the 900 's were on 10000 mile/12 month service schedules ?

Personally speaking ... I wouldn't have one as a gift (n)

There is a helpful YouTube vid bye an American YouTuber 'Blue ADV' who explains how to get to the valves and any subsequent adjustment required ( in 3 parts starting with tank removal) with a couple of other vids. Yeah a lot of crap to take off i.e. tank, throttle body etc. Probs why its so expensive just Stealer labour costs alone. He does miss fairly important bits out and skips on areas but helpful. I think the 12k service can be a doable DIY job, just like everything, taking your time. to do it. Thanks @sye you're a Star Mate.

£1000 for a service
Madness
Only if one pays that amount. Mine was done at Cobb and Jagger. Less than £800. Still expensive but not £1000.
I’m still considering changing it before the next big one but what to change to.
The F900 GSA looks interesting but probably heavier, the V85TT looks very interesting and back to a Shaft drive, V Strom 800 DE, Africa twin or Transalp, perhaps Yamaha will bring a 900 Tenere out?

Have any owners who've done 40 or 50k miles +, commented on whether anything actually needed adjusting at the 'big' service. When I had my last Africa Twin, it supposedly needed valves checking at 16k miles, very few who had that service needed any adjustment so many, me included, delayed the check to 24k miles (and the vast majority still needed no adjustment)
Just a thought

For 1k I got 4 service's on my s1000xr including the big 18000,which I think is 800ish on its own.Bmw service plan works well if you do the miles.

It's going back about 18 months when I was quoted £750 at the dealer I bought the bike from. Webbs in Lincoln quoted £450 so they got the work, in the end it was a bit more as the brake fluid was due to be changed but they called me before going ahead with that. The bike was having issues with the quick snifter which didn't seem to like getting wet. Despite being out of warranty they spoke to triumph and got it changed

Well the GS is now sold, so now looking for a decent 2024 GT pro with luggage. Just for your info ( Triumph owners) the link gives standard servicing prices at Triumph dealers.
The 3 Triumph dealers near me; Standard price for a 12k service:
Youles Manchester - £913.65
Smiths Chester - £699.17
Stafford Triumph - £701.64
I wont be going anywhere near Youles at Manchester at their prices! So it pays to shop around £200 difference ??
