1150 Servo query

Got a 2002 1150GS ABS Servo model which (for the first time) I decided to garage for the winter (accumate connected) and use the trusty 850R instead.

Went to start the GS today and everything fine except brake warning lights stayed on - the red triangle and failure lights. Tried again and servo whined but failure light continued to flash rapidly. Pressing front lever, the servo whined away - rear lever - nothing. Also noted that rear brake seems to be binding slightly (can still turn rear wheel). Brake light bulb works on using both brakes individually. Brake fluid reservoirs fine.

Any ideas?

Tried replacing the rear bulb (more in hope than anything else) but still the same - red triangle warning light stays on, failure light flashes rapidly on switching on ignition, servo whines briefly and failure light slows momentarily (to its usual frequency) then flashes rapidly again. ABS relay (I think) clicking away in time with flashing failure light.

? suggestions please (useful ones!!)

Sounds like the rear brake switch to me. Tried soaking it in WD40 and making sure you can hear the micro switch make and break?

Guys - thanks for the tips. Battery strong - fires up the bike no problem and on Optimate III over the winter. Switch seems fine (but gave it some WD40 for luck) since brake light comes on. Now cleaned up rear caliper (not much crud) and wiped the end of the rear ABS sensor. Problem persists. Servo works fine on front brake. Nothing on back. ? electrical. ? something needs reset

Anythings possible... but it is only one switch its not two separate switches for brake light and the servo. So if the brake light comes on, surely the switch has got to be working? It might be worth checking the 2 connections on the right hand side of the seat, when I had the sub-frame out on mine I missed one and it caused a fault.

Cheers. Checked connections and all seems fine. Fault remains. Baffled

Getting lots of information suggesting poor battery is the likely problem (new battery fitted in May '06 and done 22k miles since - no stop/start stuff) Battery on Otimate III over the winter (which some folks say weakens the battery!!). Suggestion that I take the bike for a 'good run' and try to see whether problem resolves itself and, if so, replace battery.

Battery now flattens quickly with repeated starting of the bike in the garage. Is new battery the likely answer? What about the ABS relay?

In desparate need of guru help. Battery fully charged and starting bike with no problem. Been out for a 25 mile ride and 'triangle' warning light remains on and failure light flashes rapidly (significantly more rapid that normal self testing that the brakes normally go through). Servo works on front brake but nothing on rear. Rear brake switch working, rear bulb working (both filaments checked), fluid reservoirs fine. Questions in my head now are:
1. Is there a problem with the rear ABS sensor
2. Is there a problem with the ABS relay
3. Is there a problem with the servo
4. Is it now a job for a dealer?

I`m having the sam problem with my 1150 GS 02.
I`ve been told that the circuit is failing and the abs unit needs to be replaced or need to by pass the ABS

Going for the later, but if anybody has any other ideas, all info is apprecated

Try bleeding the back brake circuit

Just for clarity, have you tried riding it, or are you just starting it and staring at the warning lights?

Does the back brake work at expected residual level?
Wondering if the servo has to see the microswitch on (which is happening) plus a pressure buildup before it will start?

Bit of background

Got the bike serviced a few weeks ago, and got the front discs changed. (mototech). Told him before the service, the back brake was a little spongy, but it was the same after the service

Anyway just finished a weeks ridin in scotland (1700 miles), but when i was over there, for no reason, the 2 ABS / brake failure lights were coming on. If i turn it off, it goes away, but comes back the next day, again for no reason.

Came back on Sat, and dropped into Mototech, which put the bike on the computer, no faults, however when you put your foot on the rear brake, you hear the servo, but then after a few seconds the servo stops working. All okay on the front.... servo continues to work.

Mototech advised the circuit is going to fail, and the best thing to do is the over ride the ABS. (the alternative is a replacement ABS unit, GBP 1200 ish)

I done approx 10k miles over the last year on the bike, and the battery is new, so it not lying up. ALways wait a few min for starting also.

Any ideas

Not doubting mototech, but i would like to keep the bike with the ABS if possible

If it was me, I'd ride the bike gently for ten miles. Stop. turn off engine. Restart and see what happens. you battery might just be low. You could ride it to the dealers

Your only other option is a 2nd hand unit. The problems with this are you don't know if it will last 3 weeks or 10 years as they seem to give up randomly.
The ABS units are not servicable, so unfortunately cannot be repaired.

Sorry Ian, but it looks like your options are new pump (ouch!) or remove.
