Howdy,

My '02 1150 vibrates unpleasantly at 5000 RPM, whether on load or a light throttle.

Puts me off riding the thing "briskly". Runs well in all respects, just this roughness has me annoyed.

Checked the b'fly sync, valve clearances, went back to standard silencer, back to std cat-code plug, took off the crash-bars, still the same.

I am sure the 1200 has me spoiled, it is very smooth, but I would welcome suggestions on what to do to sweeten this one up?

Bin

And Mine, even after a full service and ages spent getting the valves, tbs, and tps etc spot on, still vibrates like a bugger at 5K and above. So much so that I`m wary of fitting a new GPS in case it kills it! After around 40 - 50 miles my right hand goes numb.............Sorry I cant help I`m looking for advice as well.

Cheers DD :beer::beer::beer:

Hi Everyone
Just bought a 2001 r1150gs with 45,500 km no cat stock exhaust. This bike vibrated so bad at all rpm settings, couldn`t use the mirrors.Brought it back to the dealer they did a throttle cable adjustment. This made it better but not great.

Read through adventure rider forums and followed the maintenance advice.
First put a can of seafoam in the gas tank.drove it for 282 km refilled tank.
vibration still there but a liitle less.
Second set valves.did a throttle sync.found R/H big brass screw out 2 turns more than L/H.Drove the bike untill it needed gas.about the same amount of vibration.
Third redid the valves and also rocker arm adjusted. Then resync throttle bodys. Now big brass screws both set at one and a half turns. A lot less vibration. Put on 1000 km.vibration was realy bad at 100 km/h in sixth gear at 3000 rpm.
Fourth reset L/H throttle tps sensor to 0.360 volts was at 0.320.Another throttle sync.big brass screw within an eighth of a turn of each other.vibration down but not in sixth gear.
fith set hall sensor to full advance.checked tire pressure. removed the gas tank cleaned out all water.resync throttle r/h out a quarted turn more than L/H .vibration still low in fith gear & more pull in fith gear will almost red line in fith gear @111 mph on gps.still vibration in sixth at 100km/h.
Replaced transmittion gear oil and rear drive axle gear oil with royal purple max gear 75w90 full syntetic.Sixth gear vibration nearly gone & my hands don`t go numb for about 100km insted of 20 km.

I purchased the bike Sept 24/07 and I put on 6000 km trying to solve the vibration issues.I have no more vibration issues with the bike now & its the only bike I ever put that many miles on in six weeks.

Howdy,

Bin

Is that at 5,000 rpm in any gear, or at a road speed equivalent to 5,000 rpm in top ?

I.E. could it be the transmission / wheel balancing or is it definitely engine-related ?

Its the fact that it happens at light throttle openings that raises the question.

Some days my '04 1150 feels rough, but it seems to depend on road surface and load (e.g. pulling into a headwind on rough tarmac). Other days its just fine. I have stopped worrying.

Does anyone suffering from excessive vibes have a "Y" piece fitted? I found that vibrations seem to be more noticeable since fitting a "Y" piece in place of a cat.

Just my observations FWIW

perhaps / maybe / dunno...but.....

had this problem (though on a completely different Bike  - an R80/7)

went through everything i could think of and was about to give up......
then i checked the engine mounting bolts and... one was loose :blast

that fixed it!

Engine mounts tight, tks.
Y-piece fitted, not sure if it made things worse.
Tried CCP link, no noticeable difference.
Vibes are noticeable in all gears.
??

Hi feller,welcome to the forum.
How did you balance the TBs?.Manometer or Twinmax.
Did changing the gear oil really make that big a difference?.
Who makes the Royal Purple Max gear oil?.
Not sure if its commonly available in the UK.

I used a manometer.
After changing gear oil it was a noticable change in sixth gear.
Max gear oil is made by Royal Purple.
So do a search for Royal Purple web site and there product is availabe worldwide.

Mine has always been noticeably rougher at 5,000 in any gear. Smooth as silk above and below.

Spending hours adjusting the valves or balancing the throttle bodies doesn't make any difference to the rough spot.

I've just come to the conclusion that it's a mass/speed issue and live with it.

It's not so bad that I avoid sitting at 5,000 rpm, I just know I'm there without looking at the tacho.

Rough/smooth

been trying to pin a `certain roughness` for ages. On a run to Scotland last weekend I noticed that the 1150 ran noticably smoother on BP petrol. experimenting this week so far, 1/2 tank supermarket petrol rough, replaced with BP smooth ????
Anyone else noticed this.
P.S. Im not getting backhanders from BP (would be appreciated though)

I.I have no more vibration issues with the bike now & its the only bike I ever put that many miles on in six weeks.

Maybe because the engine has now bedded in fully at a higher mileage :D:D

Could have saved yourself a lot of bother . :blast

Hey that`s great news. Now I can tell the wife I have to go for a drive to keep it working properly instead of wrenching.
