1150 Vibration

Mine does vibe through the footrests, been noticing now you lot mentioned it as I was riding to work.I gets worse with increasing RPM and you can feel it through the bars, although less harsh. I thought its just secondary vibes from the engine, but as there is a distinct whine (you can hear it louder when going past buildings in town) from the back I'm going to get it looked at by someone who knows them. Planning a trip so want to know if its about to self destruct. The whole bike wants a going over (when I get time) and I know I need some bits for it (horrible squeaking at rear with suspension movement too). Mines done 50,000 so far.

Any good indepedants near Cambridge or North London?

Stripped the back end down and the tapper rollers for the rear drive unit were shot, looks like some one has over tightened them. The UJ were fine and so were all the seals. I am going to fit new bearings and making sure the drive shaft UJ's are aligned.:thumb2

Good move:thumb2

If you're going to do the bearings 'by the book' and torque them to preload (I do, but others do it by 'feel'), make sure you get the threads scrupulously clean (remove all the old loctite so they are silky smooth - use acetone / nail varnish remover and degrease well). It's only 7Nm to preload them and dirty threads will screw up the torque.

FWIW, after the first time I changed mine I didn't bother using the specified loctite 2701 (absolute b*tch to release and clean off if you ever need to change them again - DAMHIK  ) - I used standard blue loctite 243 - holds fine and much easier to disassemble and clean. To get round not having the special tool (which allows you to hold the adjustable pinion at 7Nm while you do up the locknut to 110Nm), I just loctite the adjustable pinion to 7Nm and leave it overnight to harden. You can then do up the locknut with a standard socket and torque wrench (use pencil 'witness marks' to make sure nothing moves).

Apologies if you know this already - not wanting to teach you how to suck eggs (just had to remove my swingarm twice in two weeks so its fresh in my mind  )

cheers

Twin or single spark?

If it's a twin park the coil sticks are prone to failing. If one has gone down the bike will vibrate. It'll also vibrate if the throttle balance is out.

Thanks for the heads-up on the assembly, that’s what I will be doing tonight before a trip to the pub with the lads. The GS is a single spark and I was thinking about the tyres, properly comparing the Ducati’s road tyres to the tourances is not fair on the BMW. :augie
