OK, here we go again.

I know of the specs differences between the two bikes.....but, what (if any) main differences are there in real life riding conditions between the two bikes?

I mean, what can you feel it makes the difference between the two models?

Still shrinking my mind.... :nenau

I ran an early gs for 5 years and am running a gsa now. The main differences for me so far are:
1. the ground is further away - tip toe manoeuvres all the time
2. longer travel suspension is slightly more vague (although this may be a memory loss - had a k1200s in between which was pin sharp)
3. longer travel suspension is even more brilliant off road - soaks hits more easily, reacts less to some amazing stuff going under the wheels
4. 1 piece seat is less comfortable for pillion (but still better than K1200 and KTM adventure)
5. One piece seat allows easy movement around the bike
6. in my case, now have heated grips and ABS - ticks for both!
7. more tank range is handy
8. weight of extra fuel on full tank makes height issue more notable - I tend only to fill when I'm going distance (but I do a lot of slower speed single track roads with gravel / grass / mud in the middle)
9. Lower first gear is better for me
10. loss of luggage platform - harder to tie a briefcase down (not a huge issue!)
11. looks even better!
12. screen protection works better for me, although adjustment range seems worse.

Lots of other stuff is the same - switchgear, engine response, ownership package, dealer support, forums, big smile when riding, etc.

Hope that helps!

As said

1150Adv

They look much better

The lower 6th gear is much better and makes you more able to make use of the engine's torque

You can swap out the Adv seat for a dual seat from a 1150GS and also change the screen to anything you want

Not having to fill up so often is a bonus

Get the Adv you won't be disappointed

However compared to my 1200Adv, the 1150Adv I also own is much, much slower

Having said that the 1150Adv is a better 'bimbling' bike in the true GS genre

I find the seat better on my Adventure than on my 1100.

Close to 300 miles between filling is nice but I stop anyway after 100.

On TKC's and with the suspension hard it's a bit too high sometimes and can catch you at at junctions now and then.

Nicer feel to riding it, more on it than in it.

Barn door of a screen swapped for a smaller, better looking MRA.

Better rear rack.

If you buy an 1150 you'll want a GSA tank with in 6 months if only for the looks.

If you have a small willy, buy an adv. If you are confident that your manhood is of acceptable proportions, go for the standard bike :D:D:D

I had a standard 1150 and changed the seat to the ADV seat which I found to be far more comfortable when off road. The extra suspension travel of the adv could be useful. but to be fair, my standard GS did everything I wanted it to do.

The large tank range doesn't suit me, after 220 miles I always need to stop for a fag and drink break, so what's the point of 400 mile tank range.

On her last tour to Spain last year, the standard GS did the business.

I fitted an ADV screen on tobinators too because the standard screen is poo. As for looks, with the mods I did, mine did look like an adv, and I have a small penis :blast

A comprehensive list indeed! Don't think anyone mentioned the crash bars too. If you're going to use it for what it's designed for and get it off road then chances are you're going to drop it once in a while. I did last week in France after 500 miles on the road with 15 to go I listened to Mdm Garmin and took the shortcut. Forgot I'd not got the knobblies on! Crash bars worked great though! Stick TCK80s on it, find some mud and go and have some fun. Tank too - I hate filing up! 500 miles with luggage, blasting it and only 2 fill ups. Works for me.

cheers flip:(

Your alright fella, your eleventy foot 10, 12 inches would look small :thumb

I haven't seen mine in years. Did have a peek down there a while back and thought I had a nasty growth on the end, turned out to be my big toe nail :blast:blast

As to which GS though, just buy a nice one you can afford and have fun, they all rock (except for the unreliable ones :augie:augie)

Ahh yes, the ADV crashbars, i'll give them a mention for you - I've seen more bikes written off than anything saved through having those type of crashbars. The top of the bar acts as a pivot point/fulcrum, once the bike reaches it and goes over the other side you can say goodbye to the tank, handlebars, clocks and all the instrument consul. Especially when the large ADV tank is full. :augie Result is thousands of pounds worth of damage instead of just a scrapped rocker cover.

I've a standard GS, fitted with the large ADV tank and ohlins shocks and an MRA screen and a corbin seat and i want for nothing.

You can keep the ADV price premium, and use it to get all the correct bits for a standard GS and have a much better bike than a standard ADV at the end of the day.

Ah Steptoe don't say that, I'm due to be the proud owner of an ADV, collecting it on Saturday!

I've gotta standard GS with the little willy GSA tank but have never seen anything like 400 miles outta a tank. 300 with luggage if I'm not going silly.

Wot do others get outta the GSA tank?

I agree with Steptoe. Vanilla flavour is best. Stick Ohlins and the screen and seat of your choice and you have the best bike.
GSA is vaguer with standard shocks. It does look good though.
You can keep the larger tank simply because it is too heavy full and if you are travelling with anyone else they will stop and fill up leaving you wondering whether you should do the same as you have one third of a tank left.

Height doesn't matter but if your inside leg is less than 33" stick with the standard GS!

Oh, and you may like to try picking up a dropped one with a full tank and luggage on your own before making your mind up. The standard bike with ABS is 228Kg dry. Add in around 23Kg for fuel and you're over a 1/4 ton before your luggage. If you ever ride alone you need to be able to pick it up...........

The Adventure is taller, heavier, carries more fuel etc. etc..........

Last week, on returning from Orkney via the West coast (Ullapool, Applecross, Spean Bridge, Dalwhinnie), with full Metal Mule panniers and top box, plus a full tank bag, I put 26.7 litres in after 308 miles.

I was keeping the speed to the legal limit, or thereabouts, plus some enthusiastic overtakes.

Bike is a 2004 1150 GSA with 22,000 miles on the clock (running with 15w/50 fully synthetic oil for the summer).

I have drilled the tank filler neck so can get 31+ litres in.

(24,000 mile service coming up after the Skye Camping weekend - then off to Bosnia in September/October :thumb ).

Bob.
