1150 vs 1150 ADV....in real life

I've a standard GS, fitted with the large ADV tank and ohlins shocks and an MRA screen and a corbin seat and i want for nothing.

Everlasting Youth ? :D

seriously though, a decent set of Renthals makes a hell of a difference too :thumb

You can always sell the crash bars :D . Maybe Steptoe will give you a fiver for those

Now theres a shrewd business thought, why didn't I think of that??? That kind of offer will probably seduce Steptoe into becoming a convert and life lasting friend:D:D

I thought Steptoe is our sort of Stig (from Topgear)... somesay he has DOT4 running through his veins and he changes his shoes every 10.000 miles. All we know he is called Steptoe ;)

No offence mate :spitfire:beerjug:

On the BMW spec page linked from this site it shows a GSA as using a 700w three phase alternator & the GS using a 600w three phase one with the 700w being an optional extra.

I think thats to do with the heated grips

ie non heated grip bike 600w/heated grip bike 700w

What does drlling the tank neck entail/mean??

The filler neck extends a couple of inches down into the tank - trapping air in the space above the hole.

This allows the fuel to expand if you leave it in the sun, or on the sidestand.

If you drill a 6mm hole in the neck, just below the level of the top of the tank (obviously) it allows the air out and another litre or so in.

If you fill it to the brim and leave it in the sun, or on the sidestand with a hot engine underneath - fuel pi$$es out of the overflow (DAMHIK).

If you make a quick getaway from the filling station you can usefully extend the range.

It works - but as I get older the tank capacity exceeds my bladder capacity :blast

Just in case ...........
Don't drill it in situ, the water drain pipe runs around the outside of the neck ( in the tank), and you don't want to drill through that -

take the neck out of tank, no need to disconnect the drain and breather lines, lay it on the top of the tank on a towel and drill it so you miss the metal pipe that goes around the filler neck.

:thumb That's what I did.

You can keep the ADV price premium, and use it to get all the correct bits for a standard GS and have a much better bike than a standard ADV at the end of the day.

Mmm....not sure about that. I bought one of the white 1150 GSA SEs: Big tank, bars, suspension, low 1st gear, ABS, blue and white, heated grips etc. At the time, same price as a standard 1200GS: plastic, small tank,no ABS no heated grips... I reckon I did OK. 3 years in and I've yet to see a GS that I covert more than my own. (except maybe Stolzy's - but only as he's bolted on bits of Touratech and Wunderlicht jewelery) Interesting about the physics on the crash bars though. Need to think about that one.

Ditto steptoe!

Standard does it all for me.

I've got standard bike but with adv tank and ohlins, and wunderlich screen and tobinators.

When I bought mine, I couldn't afford the premium for the Adv. I do think the single Adv seat and rack look better, and toyed with the swap, but the ability/versatility of being able to remove the pillion seat is an advantage, so i didn't bother.

When we did our Morocco trip, I hadn't got my big tank, so I strapped a 5l can to the bike, but it was a bit of a pain, hence my change to adv tank. Unless on a long trip I only fill it about 2/3 full as you do notice the extra weight.

Also got h&b crash bars on mine which I don't think would cause the same damage as the Adv bars? I'm sure Steptoe will know if that's true or not?

Overall I think Adv looks better, but in the real world it doesn't do anything better than the standard bike. These days i suppose the premium has gone too?

Main thing of course is to go 1150 and not 1200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yes... gearing

OH yes. I've also got the tall 'E' top gear and love it! It's so lazy when you have to do bit of motorway or fast A road, and even in the twisties it isn't too high.

I do wish I had a low first gear, but I mean a proper low one, not the misnomer on the Adventure which is still nowhere near low enough.

Heated grips essential on whichever one you have.

Abs.... I probably wouldn't bother again.

Hi All,

1150 GSA crashbars - Hmmmmm, I must say, from my experience over the w/end the sage Steptoe has probably got something there. I had a run down to Nth Devon for breakfast Saturday, and coming up out of Lynton, there's a very tight/steep left hairpin. Beastie served me up a false neutral right on the apex, put down a steadying boot into thin air & ..... :blast

Beastie didn't follow me down the slope only because the very edge of the road was in the way, but she did roll beyond horizontal, so formerly pristine Adventure tank now has some added sculpture - I think the crashbars probably contributed, but on the other hand, what sort of godawful mess would I have been facing without them? ...and it happened whilst temporarily without perceptible forward motion too.

I guess you pays your money, etc.

BTW thanks for the tip on R1150 GSA gearlinkage, Steptoe!:thumb2

The true litmus test - ask my wife after 300 miles. She by far and away prefers the GS back seat to the GSA and that saves considerable pain and suffering.

GS V GSA

Easy if you were bottle fed go for the standard model, if you were on the Tit its got to be an Adventure.

Ahh yes, the ADV crashbars, i'll give them a mention for you - I've seen more bikes written off than anything saved through having those type of crashbars. The top of the bar acts as a pivot point/fulcrum, once the bike reaches it and goes over the other side you can say goodbye to the tank, handlebars, clocks and all the instrument consul. Especially when the large ADV tank is full. :augie Result is thousands of pounds worth of damage instead of just a scrapped rocker cover.

Not that you need me to tell you so but agree 100% on the bars etc, actually like the handling without screen at all. :beerjug:.

We have a member on another forum, he posts here ocasionally "Toucan", he had a lowside (tightening BUSY lefthander after early rains, here say 4 months no rain, first rains all the oil and deisel comes to the top, plus TKC,s) result lowside until the crash bars got the grass, then the big flip as said, clocks tank ++++

Std GS every time!

Better looks, better handling and better comfort (esp. pillion). 'Nuff said. Ditch the screen altogether tho'. Trust me it works!

Usual load of bollocks posted here about Adv tank. If a woman's arse was that big you wouldn't find it attractive, would you? Too much weight, too high up. I know one guy who filled it right up, for the first time, to see what it would hold ... and then couldn't get the bike off the side stand. Of course it shudda been on the centre stand, but he couldn't even get it on that to begin wiv...

Oh, and wiv a std GS you don't have to suffer the embarrasment of being a Ewan n Charley wannabe...
