I ridden bikes for years and travelled all day without discomfort, but my 1150 gs causes me to start squirming after 30 mins riding (obviously my rear end is not standard BMW). My previous K1200rs & R1100RS) were fine. The question is what do I replace the seat with, I wish to go long distance touring this year. I have looked at Nippy's site and the Sargent seat seems affordable if it will relieve the ache. Any polite comments.

I tried a variety of seats. The original Adv seat is awful - it was uncomfortable on the 20 mile ride back from the dealer. I gradually went through 3 bouts of having the stock seat re-shaped & covered, before giving up and swapping the rear rack and seat for the std GS set up, which was a vast improvement (and is also much more flexible, allowing you to use a solo seat and use the pillion area as an additional luggage rack).

It still wasn't good, though. I got Melvin Hunter to do the gel pad thing (the gel pad merely cuts vibration - it doesn't affect the comfort in any other way - this from Melvin), but the 'distance to first stop' still didn't increase.

Eventually I got really lucky and spotted a pair of Bill Mayer seats for sale.

They are, without doubt, the single best improvement I've made to my bike. The best testimonial I can give is that I never have to consider seat comfort as a factor on a trip any longer. I'll do a tankful (31L) on the Adv and get off as good as new.

By all means try other options, but be aware I probably spent £500 on various solutions before finding the right one...

Cattell......have a play with the search button at the top of the screen..there have been many many threads about seats before and you'll find enough info to keep you reading for hours.

I've concluded before that there are as many comfort solutions as there are bum shapes......I've tried a corbin seat on someone else's bike and didn't like it, but I don't have any problems with the comfort of the standard Adv seat with a sheepskin on it.

Mike's solution certainly seems to work for him, but that doesn't mean it will for you.

Read up all you can, but I suspect it's still going to be trial and error to find a seat or solution that suits your particular bum.

PS what sort of dicomfort do you experience???
Many people have found that using bar risers or peg lowering makes things significanlty better- just altering your posture on the bike could solve the discomfort maybe.
