I have a 2002 GSA with what look like factory crash bars fitted. Following a bit of a ding the bars are bent and i need to take them off to straighten them. The problem is as follows!

The nearside ( left side as you sit on it ) came off lovely and simply. The offside or right side i cannot figure out how the horizontal bar from the frame is connected - i have tried brute force and ignorance and that has failed! my initial thinking is that i need a long allen key to go through the bar near to the frame but that seems a little backwards to me.

Am i being totally stooopid or is there a special tool or knack to getting it off.

hope someone out there can help :)

Take the black cap off the end there's an allen bolt deep inside.I used to use scaffolding pole to straighten mine never took then off the bike.:thumb2

You need ...

... a long reach allen key, or an extension and poke it down the horizontal strut. You may find that the welds have fractured if the bang was sufficient to bend them, mine went on both sides :blast

had mine taken off when it was last serviced, as one of the welds had failed........

don't know if I'll get it fixed and put them back on as I'm not overly impressed with them.

I guess that they should come off easily, but good luck regardless

Cheers

thanks, only problem is the rubber/plastic bung has been pushed down the tube ( granted due to my handfistedness) does anyone know what size allen key i would need ??? i have concocted an extension setup for a cordless drill long enough to reach but without the right size i keep getting stuck on the rubber grommit thingy!

Fan bloody tastic!!!!! thanks for your help chaps :) a little more perseverance in the right area has paid dividends!!!! finally got it off, thanks you've all saved me about 6 hours of fannying around with a hammer culminating in the wife getting beaten!!! :) my wife and i are grateful cheers

Crash bars

Dump the things and get a pair of Mr Steptoes head gards, these crash bars will flip the bike over in a speedy crash ansd do all sorts of damage. You may find the bold is bent when you remove it check the gearbox casing where it goes into for damage.
