Hi Folks

Has anyone converted to alloy wheels? At 160.000 thought I would treat my gs to a wheel refurb, several trips to Talon and 7 months later they decide they can do them!! Anyway wheels went to Doug, and all sorted. In the interim I purchased rs 1100 alloys, after mucking around managed to get rs speedo and the front fits. However the rear brake caliper will not fit, I assume the rs and gs have different diameter discs. Does the rs caliper work?

any help would be gratefully received.

The wheel nuts sorted with RT ones which are 5mm shorter, its just this disc issue, its about 4mm bigger diameter and one of the caliper bolts wont line up, even with a bit of massaging the brake carrier!

Should probably put the referb spoked wheels on, but just want to see what the wider tyres do!

Thanks for the link, just realised that despite the wheels looking the same as the ones in the photos, my rear disc sits on the inner boss not the spokes, I think that there is therefore a difference in disc diameter.

Hi Chap, I may be wrong and stand corrected if so but I think the 1100 alloy wheels don't fit the 1150 gs, I believe you need 1150 r/rs/rt wheels to make the conversion. I have RT wheels on mine (with the correct speedo drive) and other than the over 95 mph disengagement of the abs no probs at all. Cheers:beerjug:John B

Sorry John, but the 3-spoke 1100 series wheels fit fine usually, as long as they are from a model with the front wheel speedo drive. It's mainly the K series ones that can cause problems but I used to have a K1 rear and an R1100R front on mine. I preferred the R1100R front as it gives you fully floating discs and I've used it for the last 11yrs. I changed the rear after a couple of years as I wanted to be able to use cheap 17" rear tyres rather than the 18" ones, so I picked up a Boxercup rear wheel from eBay.de for £100 and that's been fitted for 9yrs now. Highly recommended and allows anything from 170-190 rear tyres.

A little bit of researching around the different model parts fiches will tell you which models have which diameter rear discs and then you can source the appropriate version of carrier/disc combo.

I think that the wheels I have are 1100rs or 1150rs (5 spoke) the front did not have a drive so a purchased appropriate wheel from Sherlocks, they sent at 1200gs wheel with no drive, looked identical to the 5 spoke rs, this was replaced with I think 1150rs wheel. Is there a difference in rear disc size? Will post pictures some one may be able tpo tell me what wheels I have!

I've got the 5.5 inch rs rear wheel on mine and the rear disc sits on a carrier, the carrier then bolts straight to the final drive not the wheel like the GS spoked wheel.

That's the same as my set up. The disc off the spoked wheel fits the carrier you mentioned so no need to buy another or fitment issues....:thumb2

Incidentally, I have a front alloy wheel off a 1150RT for sale if anyone is interested in doing this conversion. I bought it but ended up with two so selling one, £100 plus postage or collection possible from the Bridgwater area.

It's a K1200RS rear wheel that uses the carrier - I had one fitted for a while but bent the wheel and couldn't find another at the time so ended up with an R1100S standard 5" rear. The K1200RS rear with disc carrier and R1150R/RT/RS is the best combination IMO. - after CF BST's of course:augie

Just bought this beauty with cast wheels.
The original invoice says RT front and 1100s rear.
I think the clocks are RT too as they have alloy bevels.
This unfortunately means my new Migsel gps mount won't fit as the bevel is a different diameter.

I'm curious what the front mudguard is from though?
Any ideas?

Interesting, thanks Paul.

The spoked wheels were an option on RT and R models where they use a spoked 18" front wheel, so it was one of the things I looked into for the GS many years ago. They're like rocking horse s**t to find secondhand, though, and stupidly expensive to buy as a new item... The alloy wheel route is probably much better for most Tossers :)

I have a spare K1200RS rear wheel if you want to see if it fits, if so a cheap price will buy it.

At work when the first r1100rt demonstrators were provided by BMW they had spoked wheels with the 18" front and 17" rear , the production ones supplied came with 3 spoke alloy wheels which were a 17" front and 18" rear , the lads always said they bikes handled better on the spoked wheels.

Having ridden a r1100gs with a 18" spoked front and 17" spoked rim fitted with road tyres it seemed the ideal combination and was better than my 1150gs when it had 17" r1150rt rims fitted front and rear
