I've got the well known RID "random information display" of gears selected on my 1150gs. It started after a very thorough winter clean. I'm not sure if the problem is the switch or the connector under the tank. Does anyone have a wiring diagram or link showing which pins should do what?

If I know which is the live feed pin I should be able to test the switch with a meter and test the display with a power supply. Does it run at 12 volts or a reduced voltage?

it's the sender on the back of the gearbox. leave it 'til it dries out & it will be fine.

Dry out in a Scottish winter? I love optimists! Over a week so far and no improvement.

Hello Dusan

First go for a long ride to use most of the fuel. The tanks b....y heavy when full. Remove seat. Disconnect battery. Remove plastic side cover on right side. Disconect fuel feeds, overflows and wiring connector and remove tank. Remove live terminal on starter motor cover on left, it unscrews just liek any other bolt. Remove plastic starter motor cover. One screw at rear and the gently pull it backwards. The front edge is located on two lugs which locate in rubber bushes. Remove sump bash plate. Remove exhaust down pipes. Loosen silencer fixing to hanger but leave in place. Trace wiring from sensor in catalyst to plug on right side of frame below tank location, unplug and cut all ties. Unthread wiring and lay in safe position. Remove fixings for catalyst each side by centre stand pivot. Working from left remove silencer fixing and remove silencer and catalyst complete, protect trailing cable. Try not to give yourself a hernia as you realise why your beloved GS weighs 250Kg wet. On back of gearbox in front of swing arm you will see a black rubber item held in place by a spring clip This is the gear position switch and the apparent cause of woe. Ensure area is clean. Squeeze two ends of clip together and slide sensor backwards from rear of box. Trace wiring behind starter motor and up left side of frame to plug & socket by frame rail beside the ABS units or the space where they would be if you have a non-abs bike. You may need to remove the plastic liner from the rear wheel arch and loosen or remove the plastic box that contains fuses, relays etc. to trace and remove the wire for the switch. Disconnect the plug/socket with care as the terminals inside are very small. Remove wiring and switch, get the new one and reverse the above procedure. I would suggest connecting the new switch prior to installation and reconnecting the battery to see if everything functions correctly. You can puta screwdriver into the slot on the switch to rotate it and simulate the gear changes. Be very gentle as I don't know how fragile these are. You can also move the gearlever and check that the spindle protruding through the gearbox housing to activate the switch is moving. Then reverse the dismantling precedure.

Don't try the above instructions if you have a 1100 - they're different, 1100 has two switches, one is a gear indicator, the other a nuetral switch.

And they're held in place with very small, soft bolts  do you suffer from nightmares ;)

Hello Steptoe

I haven't tried tracing the neutral indicator on the 1150gs but had assumed that it was a seperate unit as it is still functioning correctly. Am I wrong on that? Any suggestions for tracking down the switch wiring diagram?

Packer,

Is this what you want?

I swapped a faulty one on my K100 a couple of months ago - £36ish. The neutral switch is built into the unit as per the 1150GS.

This is a close up of the 1150 switch unit:

Fanx guy's

Ta for info, seems alot o work, no cat on my 1150, and was led to believe by local bmw dealer I could just replace the unit (will be the third one as previous owner did the same) in situ? :nenau :clap :bounce1 :clap :beerjug: :bow
cheers anyway, many thanks Dusan

You're a lucky guy Dusan, but you'll still need to at least lift the tank and remove starter cover etc to trace the wiring unless the previous owner deliberately left it accessible which I would certainly want to do after the second new one! Just think without a catalyst your GS probaly only weighs 100Kg!

Thanks Rob, I've asked the administrator to forward my e-mail address along with a request to you to e-mail a higher resolution file if you have it as I can't get enough detail from the forum image.

Cheers big P

Many thanks for help n advice, think you missed a '0' on the gs weight!!! especialy when I'm sittin on her!!!!! New/second hand adv tank hopefully arriving next week wid QD petrol pipes, so will do gear change sender at same time, let you know if it works, cheers mate, regards Dusan :bow :clap :bow
