Gents need some advise please. I am having the clutch replaced and the supplier of the clutch (Sachs) advises to fit 1.2mm spacers between the frame cover and tangential leaf spring, to be removed after the clutch has bedded in and worn down. This is double work. If the spacers are not fitted. Would there be a problem? I know the standard clutch is 5.5mm and the Sachs clutch is 6.5mm. Hence the spacers. Please advise.

If you fit the spacers, will you just get the same wear range as standard = same life before you can either replace the disk or remove spacers for a wee bit more life? I think not fitting the spacers may stress the pressure plate.

Hi Bin Ridin, that is why I am asking questions. So far I have seen everything about clutch + shafts + wear. Not one straight up answer. Fit the spacer, don't fit the spacer, I have done that and this is what happens. But it is still early days. I am sure I will get the right advise.

Sachs is the maker of the original clutch for BMW, so I am a little confused as to what the question is exactly. Maybe you can elaborate a little.

Hi,
Are you fitting a new pressure plate and release bearing at the same time as new friction plate? Risky not to.
The thicker friction plate will move the splined hub slightly towards the gearbox on the splined g/b input shaft, all else being equal. This is no harm.
Anyhow, if this is what is available, I would go for it, with the spacers.
I wonder could you remove the spacers later without splitting the bike, through the starter motor aperture?
Bin

Hi I bought a Touratech clutch (Sachs). In the kit I got, 1 clutch plate, 1 packet with 6 washers. 3, 1mm thick and 3, 0.2mm thick and a bit of grease and instructions. I am told the following. Fit 1mm spacer to 1100GS clutch assy. Fit 1.2mm to 1150GS clutch assy. After riding for a unspecified period, remove spacers. I have read that the Sach clutch is 6.5mm thick as to the BM 5.5mm thick. My question is what will the effect be if I do not fit the spacers, has any one tried?

Hi Bin Ridin. I am replacing everthing. As to being able to get the washers out without stripping the bike. I will have to take a look. Thanks for your input.

OK, I think I get it now.
You are looking at the Touratech ceramic clutch. The clutch is thicker so they give you shims so the clamping is done in the same "range" as the regular clutch which is about 1mm thinner.
This has nothing to do with the clutch hub spacer regarding worn input splines on the input shafts of R1150s (and other bikes with hydraulically actuated clutch)
After the clutch wears (1mm or so), you remove the spacers (washers) which should be possible through the starter hole.
But wearing 1mm out of a ceramic clutch will take a long time, if ever, if everything is normal.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advise. I have not had the time to check if the spacers can be removed through the starter hole. I am quite confident it can be done. Time will tell.

Is there a benefit to using a ceramic clutch? Are there any disadvantages? My original clutch is just shy of 100,000 trouble free miles and no sign of needing to replace it yet.
