Having fitted a std GS seat & rack to my Adventure, I've lost the spot under the seat where I had my Icom radio mounted. The logical place to re-locate it is where the tool tray is. Does anyone know if there is an aftermaket replacement for the moulded tray? Ideally something which would keep out the elements and still allow a cover to be fitted on top, as well as allowing the fit of the rear seat.

Any ideas?

Best rest top plate and toolroll

I purchased a BestRest top plate and toolrool and it's an overpriced, poorly thought out piece of junk. Small tools not held in the cheap plastic tube are able to find their way out of the foam and hence fall off the bike to be lost forever. If you want mine you can have it.

I bought the Bestrest toolplate/tooltube also, but in contrast to lkyphl I am very pleased with it. I made sure that none of my tools was lost by using a canvas coin bag. The tool tube holds all the smaller BMW tools securely and is 100% waterproof. However, the shaped foam sheet which replaces the tacky BMW tray merely sits on the mudguard and lets water in through the folds.

I would think that for weather protection, depenciing on its size/shape, it wouldn't be difficult to fit the Icom in something like a margarine tub, suitably grommeted, under the toolplate.

If you're not too far away we could arrange a meet for you to have a look.

Sorry, should have looked at your profile first. I'm at a rally near Belvoir next weekend so could easily meet somewhere between Spalding and Wisbech on Saturday if you fancy.

Over to you.

Mick,

Thanks for that. I've successfully cut out the bottom of the tool tray &, having heat-sealed the Icom into a heavy duty plastic bag, managed to fit it in. There's even room for a spare-bulb pack.

I considered duct taping around the inside of the space, to try & weather-proof it, but I reckon you'll never stop water getting in from around the seat & tool tray lid (the tool tray has drain holes in it!).

So far, so good. The original plastic lid on the tool tray is clearly better for my purposes, a metal one would hamper/stop the radio signal.
