I'm tempted by an 1150GS or even an Adventure now as they look so nice.

I've heard the Adventure has a lower top gear than the regular 1150GS.

Is this true and is this a problem on long motorway trips? Does it effect fuel consumption?

Thanks again!

My 2004 1150 adventure will chug along all day at 80/85 very comfortably, never been a problem on the motorway

Had both and the Adventure has a shorter top gear (well mine has), so it does rev a bit higher on motorways. So, I stay off motorways... Otherwise I much prefer the Adventure.

Not necessasarily, it was an option.
But hardly noticable, not as people would have you believe, thats why you get so many questions from people trying to find out if they have the adv option gearbox. If it were a massive difference you'd know it just by riding it.

that told em. :clap

after 90,000 miles on a standard 1150, I found the adventure 'low' top gear unbearable.

Luckily I had a spare 'box so swapped them over.

Worth 5 mpg to me as well.

If I had kept the GSA I would have also swapped back to standard suspension.

Standard bike far better handling at speed and I also think that the increased s/a angle is the cause of the gearbox vibration.

I guess I really wanted an RT:blast

Just prefer the looks

Yes it's true - and the GS will probably give more MPG but the GSA has the bigger tank so that cancels the extra MPG out.

You shouldn't decide on which one to have by the gearing difference alone - there are much more important things like weight and height for example - both are different beasts...

First ADV models had a standard tank, the larger tank was an option. My standard GS has the 32 ltr tank fitted, best of both worlds.

They aren't that different, a few cosmetics and higher ride height but the basics underneth are identical . Is it worth the extra ££££, no.

Same here... Std GS with split seats but 32l tank & Adv screen. I prefer having a load tray in place of the pillion seat & wasn't keen on the 1-piece Adv seat. The shorter suspension also means it has a slightly lower CofG, so handles slightly better.

In 2006 the 'right' 1150 GSA came up on this site and I just had to have it. Fortunately I kept my standard GS just in case.

On a tour of France, Austria and Northern Italy on the Adventure, I missed to higher 6th gear. The extra height of the GSA made it feel heavier to manoeuvre (especially on the Stelvio etc) even with the tank half full. Unfortunately I was not able to use the large tank to any advantage as my riding mate was on a 'standard' GS. Shortly after coming home, I sold the GSA and kept the standard.

All of this is, of course, only my opinion. Best bet is to ride them back to back and see which you personally prefer.

Had 2 GS's and a GSA; found the lower gear useful in traffic and on windy dirt tracks and harepins when overseas, but mostly when fully loaded with a pillion. .........GS clutch started smelling a bit on the steep windy slow hills.

Prefered the higher gear for touring on the GS though.

Next GS will have an even lower 1st gear and an overdrive 6th ....problem solved :augie
