1150gs wheel conversion

I did this on a previous 1150 that I had, but have forgotten what’s compatible to convert to alloy wheels? Is it any 1150RT wheels or do I also need to get ones that are ABS like my bike? Have also heard I can use a larger rockstar back wheel? Again does that need to be ABS? Think I need shorter rt bolts for the rear as well?

Wide back tyre 180 55 17 I think is a bastard you basically need to swing your arse in the corners

Its VERY off putting when you first take one out set up like that

I have a pair of alloy wheels that have been powder coated black. I may be tempted to sell them if the price is right! They then went into my storage unit years ago and not touched since. I have the wheel bolts too. And some other bits.
If you’re interested I’ll dig them out and get the numbers off them. I honestly can’t remember what they are off.
I think there’s a spacer for the rear one too.
No brake discs though. I think I have an ABS ring?

There was a big thread about this many years ago, so a search will probably drag it up.

There are various permutations that will fit but DrF hit the main point that the front wheel speedo drive is not used on all models from that time. Pretty much everything else is workable, even K series rear wheels as long as you also use the brake disc carrier or R1100S rears (but not the front wheels, obviously).

I must be stuffed though, as I’ve just fitted a 190\55-17 Dunlop to my ex-Boxercup rear…

Ok. I’ll send you a message.
Just been in the garage and shed to dig all the bits I have out.
I have the front ABS ring and the rear one plus the rear brake disc ( which is like new ). I have a spacer for the rear wheel ( not a clue if this is needed or not ), a speedo drive with 2.6 marked on ( again not a clue if it’s the correct one )
two sets of wheel bolts ( one set marked 60 and the other has 55 on them ) and from what you said it sounds like you need the 55’s? . There are bits there for the speedo drive and what looks like the front wheel tube thing that goes between the wheel bearings ( which are also there but I’m guessing you’d use new ones anyway ).
Oh and the un used powder coated wheels.
There are a couple of small chips out of the rear paint but a dab of black nail varnish would quickly sort that out.
The numbers on the wheels are as follows =

Front = HL 2051 1, 2 335 507, MTH2 3.50 x 17 E

Rear = HW 2038 3?, 2 331 35? MTH2 5.00 x 17 E

The two question marks are there because I can’t quite read the number / letters correctly because of the paint build up. I’m sure from the rest of the you’ll be able to tell if they’re the right ones. Please check before you commit though. I’m pretty sure they are though.

The front brake disc bolts were in when the wheels were powder coated so the threads didn’t get full of paint. The powder coater wanted them before he did them.

I sold a set of these quite a few years ago. They were off an 1150 rt to fit directly onto 11 / 1150gs. Abs rings used are different ie u need the rt ones plus I think the speedo drive came with the wheels. Even had a carbon mudguard to suit.

Go onto flea bay and there an 1150 with these wheels and mudguard which I suspect are my old bits as sold to BigDen ( I think).

Be prepared for the ABS to go bugrup with the 17" wheels. I eventually just removed it as I didn't really like it anyway.

These look exactly the same as I had on my 1150GS a few years back (albeit not powder coated) With the RT wheels a couple of things to be aware of, when the bike is on the centre stand with this setup, it is very easy for a gentle nudge, e.g. someone brushing past, to push the bike off the stand and on to it's side DAMHIK. The ABS with the approprate speedo drive does work, however if you go above 85-90 mph it confuses it and the lights start flashing, I used to just stop, turn it off and then re- start and this reset it. Bike does hold the road better (as you would expect with sticky road tyres) but somehow the "handling" and slow speed stuff felt different and not quite so "GS" like.CheersJohn B

Contemplating doing an alloy wheel conversion on my r1150gs using an rt rear wheel and an early pattern r1200gs front wheel which is almost the same design.

Just need to see if I can adapt the later front wheel to incorporate a speedo drive

Probably not, but bearing swaps and making up new spacers is easy enough, when I changed the Katana front end I used GSK1100K forks but wanted to use a three spoke GSX1100J 18" three spoke front wheel . Had to fit wheel bearings to suit the larger diameter K model spindle and also bore out the speedo drive but it all works .

Other option is forget the speedo drive and just use a digital speedo mounted instead of the standard mechanical item

You can fit those, no problem. 180 on a 5” rear would be the limit, though (there are 5.5” and 6” versions also) and a 170 may feel better. It a personal preference thing.
