1150GS - Widest Bit: Handlebars 0r Engine?

IIUC, the bars are wider than the engine?

Or are the mirrors the widest bit?

According to the specs, 1150GS is 980mm wide.

Is that the width of the morrors, the bars or the engine?

I've had a look through a few threads about the bike's width and access down the side of an average house.

I measured my side entrance last night - narrowest is 860mm, widest is 930mm. There are concrete fence posts & gutter/drain pipes to negotiate too.

A mate with an 1150GS stayed over back in July and couldn't get it down the side of the house - we never really looked at how much too wide it was.

I really don't want to park or work on any bike either in front of or beside my house.

I have in my back garden a great 8'x10' shed with double doors, that I got when we moved in cos I knew I was getting my ForeStorm soon.

It has power & light, a ground anchor under it through a hole in the floor, triple concealed-hasp & padlock, and my gate is double-bolted & padlocked.

How narrow can the OE bars be made and/or what width are some of the replacement bars available?

I could put two retractable ground anchors at the side of my house and put a cover over the bike, but my shed is made for a bike.

I kept my Abus chain/padlock & U-lock & 2 disc-locks, and if the bike I do buy doesn't have an alarm I'll get one fitted, but it'd be sh1te if I couldn't get a bike I yearn for just cos it won't fit down my side entrance.

Widest parts are the bars.....IIRC, on my GSA the mirror to mirroe tip length is 102 cm

A few people have fitted bars from the 1100R or 1150R - don't know what width that brings it down to though.

2002 1150GS has a handlebar width of 910mm and a mirror 'width' of 950mm. Mirror width will vary when adjusted (obviously). The bars are substantially wider than the engine.

There is a chance you could wriggle it thru if you fold the mirrors in...

My entry is 910mm wide I can get the 1150GS down by folding mirrors in and taking off the guards and end weights, I have a 20mm gap to get the bars down so you wouldn't get it down with standard bars on, I also have a set of bars with 25mm out of the center and rewelded not fitted them yet but these would allow it to go without removing the hand guards.

You should have just used 1100GS bars

I saw a bloke on the A20 at the weekend on a red and white anniversary 1100GS and it was his arse that was wider than the bars and the engine.

He has a double that can be seen pressing the suspension of a Hayabusa into the tarmac every evening on the A2 southbound.

Nice to know there's at least one fatter arse than mine on one.

if i can get a Guzzi Cali* down the side of a Corpo house / you can get a GS down the side of yours!
it's all down to being bloody minded and "wiggling"... the bike / not you.

*'Bars = widest point.... one metre feckin wide.
front gatepost = one feckin YARD wide

erm.... mind you, there is a knack and it does take practice.

It sounds like once the bike is in the back garden, the theiving scum will never nick it. At least not past the passage.

Yep. That's a major part of my security arsenal.

My FireStorm fitted down no probs, obviously. I actually considered concreting in one of those removable security posts half way down the side entrance.

I've been a real stickler for security with any bike I've owned since my FJ1200 was stolen from outside the house I was renting.

When biking mates call down, I make sure every precaution I can take has been taken to prevent theft.

This year two bikes (an 1150GS & a Harley) wouldn't go down the side, so I put my Abus chain/padlock through the two of them and my U-lock & two disc-locks on them, in addition to their own locks/alarms. Why tempt fate?

Incidentally, I found out who took my FJ, and mulled over (for 1.2 seconds) whether to get it back myself or risk telling the police and let them bungle its return.

One very bike-friendly member of the police in the station closest to where I told them my bike was, actually dragged it through a field to get it into a police van & bring it to the station pound.

I dropped him in a tray of beer. Top man.
