I've bought a 1150 gs a, which I've only put 1000 miles on, currently on a very low 6700 miles!
I rode from Derby to the Oulton Broads this weekend and on the way back the clutch started slipping when accelerating.
I will ring the vending bike shop tomorrow, but assuming they tell me to sod off regarding warranty (the bike is 12 years old after all), I was wondering the problem is likely to be and the extent of work required.
I'm thinking it'll probably be a seal weeping oil onto the clutch causing it to slip.
Any thoughts?

Pretty likely its an oil seal at that mileage. It may also be the clutch slave cylinder is leaking, or the oil seal that's lives behind it. Three little Allen's will release the slave but its a bit awkward to get at. Has the cat been replaced with a Y-piece? If so this makes it easier to get at.
You can also easily remove the starter motor and have a peek at the clutch through the hole it leaves.

Just make sure its not the clutch lever being partly held on by a poorly position handguard first though.

Thanks FnF, I'll check all those things.

At such a low mileage, I will also point my finger at the rear engine oil seal.
The bad news is that it is a 15 hour job. But quite easy.

BTW Tell the vendor you didn't buy a 12 years old bike. You bought a 5,700 miles motorcycle...

Also ensure the fluid in the reservoir is not too high & the handguard is not fouling the lever if fitted.

mine was the input seal behind the slave cyclinder, the oil was running down the rod to the plate ,i did the job myself ,its manageable :thumb

Just rang the vending dealer and waiting to see how they want to sort it.

how many miles have you done since you bought the bike.
Ignore any comments about warranty. Look instead at the Consumer Rights Act 2015. It sounds like the bike was not fit for purpose and therefore is the sellers responsibility (Assuming he is trade, not private.)

The shop have agreed to pay half toward the repair at a BMW specialist. He'll pay labour and I'll pay parts. I should be £300 down but that's with a new clutch and thrust bearing.

there is no release bearing ,at the clutch end you will probs only need a plate ,but if it has oil contamination you really need to know where the oil is coming from .

Moll Springs in Honley, Huddersfield are going to do the job.

What's the hourly rate at a BMW specialist? Changing the clutch itself is easy. Accessing the clutch requires to "split" the bike in two. 7 hours one way, and another 8 hours to carefully reassemble. We're talking 15 hours labour here. Two days. One weekend. 15 hours x £50bp/hour = £750

So, if you pay for parts, you have the good side of the deal. Just have in writing that the vendor will pay for all the labour costs.

I could do it myself but don't see why I should after two weeks of ownership!
Looks like a right pain to get to!

they know you've got them over a barrel, they're just trying to fob you off with them paying the cost of the labour, it's just like a game of poker, bluff and double bluff, i'd push for them to cover the full cost, jeeze, two week's ownership, and then having to pay out another £300, not on your nelley,,

I agree with all above but it's a second hand 12 year old bike from an independent bike shop, not a BMW approved dealer.
He's bought it in and sold it on, he has no recourse with BMW uk so anything he offers is out of his own pocket.
He got a quote from Moll Spring BMW specialist who he deals with.
They quoted £600 to do the job with parts, he offered half each, and he's doing me a set of Tyres at cost price as they were less than half worn when I bought it.
I think he's being pretty fair.
If it were A BMW dealer I would be demanding more customer service from BMW uk.
I'm going to get it up the the independent Saturday am and see what transpires.

A stiff price but fair as decent 40-50k models are fetching £5k.
