1150gsa clutch slipping

So, the clutch slave was leaking.
The slave, friction plate and pressure plates were replaced.
I collected it and have ridden 100 miles.
.... And it's slipping again!
I phoned the repairer, who said "it needs to bed in".
What?! Really? Never heard of that before. Is he having me on?


I go to Italy on a 2k round trip in three weeks!
Bit worried it'll not be ready for the trip.

My new clutch was like - a new clutch. Bedding in? What a lot of cock...

It wasn't the clutch cylinder in the first place,it was the rear input shaft seal,
Looks like someone's out of pocket on this job

That was my suggestion but he said it was definitely the slave.
I'll not be paying any more, that's for sure.

Worth checking a few things before you go back to them:

Clutch fluid has not been over filled?

Check he hasn't moved the handguard and the lever is catching.

Drive shaft slipping. Pull the gaiter between the final drive and shaft housing (swing arm). Look for bits of rubber. The shaft is made up of two parts bonded together by rubber. A torch and mirror help here.

Checked all the above and rode it all the way back to Moll Springs for a repeat repair.
Hopefully pick it up next Saturday, all fixed and ready for a trip to Italy.

I would not pay - he is currently breaking the law as a trade seller regardless of you thinking it's a fair deal etc etc.

Does not need bedding in.

It sounds like they perhaps thought they could get away with cleaning up/degreasing the low mileage contaminated clutch..... which doesn't work....

I could've done the job myself but don't see why I should after 4 weeks of ownership.

If they're going to fit another new clutch plate ask them to show you the old plate ( the one currently fitted). They have the manufacturing date stamped in them, so you'll be able to tell if it's the original one they've tried to clean/degrease... if there's no date then they've wiped it off. Ask yourself why would they wipe it off, in fact ask them why they've wiped it off.

Spoke to him tonight, he says he's pulled the gearbox and there's no leaks, so he's replaced the friction plate with a Sachs item. He says the only thing different they've done is scrub the clutch plate with 80 grit paper.
He rode it before and after and said its sorted, so I'll collect it Saturday.

Retrieved bike and almost immediately set off on a 1700 mile round trip to Italy and back, thankfully without any problems.
So, all swell that ends well.
