Hi all, relative stranger here - although I did post one other question in 2006...

Just fettling my owned from new 02 80K 1150GSA (non ABS) and it needed a replacement rear disk. At the same time I replaced the pads, piston seals and pivot pin. All went back together lovely and the pistons seem to move nicely in and out. However when I tighten up the alloy carrier it binds really badly. Took it round the block in the hope it would free up but within 100 yards water was boiling off it - not good.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but would appreciate confirmation or correction as it is driving me nuts. :nenau

The main caliper body mounts to the alloy hangers by two pivot pins. However looking at the BMW parts list it shows as one part, not 2 separate parts.

I am guessing that the caliper should move on the pivot pins as the pistons come out? In my case the right hand pivot (as you look at it) doesn't move at all. I have squirted generous amounts of WD40 under the seal and left it last night and given it a few hits with a wooden mallet but still nothing.

Is it just a case of more WD40 and larger mallets till it shifts or am I missing something fundamental here.

Thanks, Paul

Pattern disc? Seen it before on 'K' series, pattern disc running slightly 'offcentre'.

EDIT: Not applicable as 'K' series use fixed disc, not floating.:mmmm

Take it apart & clean the gaitor out, it may be full of crap, stopping the caliper from sliding on it's pins.

Red rubber grease is the way to go.

Follow up question

So, managed to separate the alloy hanger and the caliper itself, all now working well after rebuilding. However I had to cut off one of the rubber seals that protects the pivot pins while doing it and the other could probably do with replacing.

I have looked at both the Motobins and Motoworks catlogues online but can't find the parts. Mine has a BMW badged brembo caliper and I am looking for the two 'bellows' shaped seals that protect the pivot pins where the hangar mounts to the caliper.

I can't see them in the BMW parts catlogue either - anyone have any idea where they might be available.

Thanks, Paul

Turn the disc over.....?

I had a similar problem, turns out I put the disc on back to front. Annoyingly the recess in the disc fitted the bolt head perfectly so just figured it went that way round.........
Swapped it over, no binding..........

As said, the bellows are available, but just for info the pivot pins are not available seperately from the complete caliper so keep them well lubed!
