After reading that an 1150GS adventure thank fits an 1150GS I decided to fit one. Purchased at great expense from the Forum Sponsor James Sherlock I had the tank painted and tried to fit it, only to discover that it doesn't fit!!!
If I push the tank forward to engage into the bungs on the frame, and into the interlocks on the back of the front fender, the fitting at the back of the tank is about 20mm further forward than the lug on the frame. Also the 2 bungs that the plastic side panel fits into are 20mm closer together than the centres of the pins on the moulding.
The bike is a 2000 1150GS and the tank I was told is from a 2002 1150 adventure.
If anyone has any ideas why there is a difference please let me know.
thanks in advance

Can't help without seeing the bike and tank but I have fitted adventure tanks to my 850/1100GS and to a standard 1150GS and had no issues with either.

Can I ask what year the bikes and tanks were? I'm wondering if the tank is bent, as it was from a bike that has been in an accident as it came with a few dents.

That was the first thing I tried, but it falls off the bungs if I line up the boss. But the pitch between the centre of the pins on the plastic cover is 250mm but on the tank it's 230mm so it's looking like the arm that bolts to the frame is about 20mm further forward than I want it to be. Which could be modified I suppose.

I tried hitting it with a very big mallet but it's absolutely solid. That part of the tank is pretty well constructed it wouldn't bend easily.

Suggest you contact 'No shit Sherlocks' as it is clearly not fit for purpose. You may get a refund for the tank but the cost of painting will be yours me thinks.

I have a large adventure tank fitted to my 2003 1150GS, It was on the bike when I purchased it, fits fine.

I had the large 32litre adventure tank from a 2003 bike on my 1999 r1150 gs ................straight swap and all the brackets lined up perfectly.

They have the same front frame so something must be bent , out of line or one of the pipes is preventing the tank sitting in its correct position ..................... is the plate for the fuel pipes at the correct angle so the pipes are not stopping the tank sitting right.

From mine when the tank was not fully down (as in the picture) the rear bracket looked too far forward ,once the tank went down it moved backwards and the rear bracket then lined up

(Quite apart from the fact that it 'should' fit,and doesn't,so something is wrong.)
Erm,I'm struggling with that.
Struggling to believe that someone would buy a tank from a different model....then pay to get it painted....all without checking that it fitted first. :blast

First thing to do before kicking off :D is check whether the old tank still fits.

They should have identical dimensions so thats where I'd start.

There you have your answer GS and GSA tank mount dimensions are identical !

You can fit an adventure tank on an 1100 too if you change the beak arrangement a little

That tank swap has been done to death ever since the first Adventure models came out over 13 years ago, I have never heard of an Adventure tank that would NOT fit a standard 1150gs or even a 1100gs, so the OP would have no reason to believe that it wouldn't fit

Bear in mind the Adventure came with either the large tank or the smaller standard gs tank fitted as standard

Regardless...it's hard to comprehend someone buying a used part and not checking that it fits...

Especially so if it's a petrol tank that got sent away for a repaint.

Could have been damaged either on-route to the coaters or by the coaters handling before coating.
Either way, Sherlock may not commit themselves to getting it back if it doesn't fit anymore as they have a third party to blame. Buyer beware.

I suppose if the centres of those rubber panel mounting holes are different from the original then than main mount must be knocked forward
