I've asked before but not got much response...........
How does the 1200adv take knocks compared to the inferior 1150adv? Do those cow catchers works? One of my buying criteria and the reason I bought a GS was knockability resistance :)

I've dropped mine stationary on both side with panniers on and you wouldn't know it.

That's a good sign, I was thinking maybe they (bmw) had made the 1200 more fragile with all this lighter, faster business. The core value of a GS is robustness for bad roads and getting dropped all the time :thumb

The answer to the original question is that the 1200 is the sucessor to the 1150 and BMW has moved the model on.
Quite simple really :D :D

Maybe not so simple.

There's quite a few 1150 riders who expected to make the logical move to the 1200 when it came out, unfortunately, the 1200 was a disappointment for many of them. The reliability issues didn't help matters.

The first time I rode the 1200 I expected to get back and chop in my bike against it. I'd left the salesman looking at mine to give me a trade in price. After a very disappointing test ride I didn't buy one. I've tried two others since and remain unimpressed - they are good bikes I'm sure but there's something missing that I can't put my finger on. The 1200 GSA has the same something missing. I wish it didn't because I like the look of it.

Until BMW get it right I will remain an 1150 GSA rider, To be honest I expect my next bike not to be a BMW.

Exactly right.

An answer to the actual question
I'm not convinced that the crash bars on my 12adv would do a lot in the event of an off over 0 mph :(

Maybe they are not designed to,maybe they are designed as a sacrificial part to deform whilst absorbing impact instead of being rigid and passing the energy through the crash bars to the mounts (which break-often on the 1150ADV bars) and the frame to which they mount :nenau
I've dropped my 12ADV at a virtual standstill on gravel-apart from paint damage to the engine bars and cyl head guards I can see no other damage.

don't understand that at all personally.

my 1200GSA is better in almost every way than the model it replaced. the "almost" being a question mark over reliability, an area that the 1150 is no great shakes at either going by anecdotal evidence.

the 1150 is a great bike, but i am baffled by people who ride both and prefer the old one

oh yes, the 12 is a bit vibey too, but it makes up for that in having way more character IMO.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you ride an 1150 to its strengths and don't adjust your riding style to the 1200's strengths it will feel lacking, the same way as when i ride an 1150, it seems to run out of steam very quickly compared to the 1200.:nenau

A short test ride is no real judge of a bike, it may be all you get, but in the past i've had to ride thousands of miles before a bike has felt, "homely". I'm sure i'm not alone in that.:nenau

If I had an 1150GSA, unless it was old and knackered i wouldn't change, but when the time came i wouldn't hesitate at buying the 1200GSA

Shep

Of course you would know it, silly man !!
When you tried to sit on it you would get a footrest up your arse, and the handlebars would be up and down instead of across.

Tarka ...you are right. They know nuthin.

Could have written that myself Rob - but not as eloquently. :clap I went to the 1200 Adv launch as I wasn't sure whether to go for a virtually new 1150 Adv or the brand new 1200 Adv. I prefer the look of the 1200 Adv, but TBH the reliability of the 1150 Adv swung it for me - which is why I have an immaculate black 1150 Adv taking pride of place in my shed. :thumb Personally I don't understand the need to save weight. Sure the 1150 Adv is a big heavy bike, but its never been a problem.

I know there will be people saying "I've done 500 miles on my 1200 and its never let me down" etc etc :D but the sad fact is that I know a person who bought a brand new 1200 (admittedly not an Adv) but it had been giving him grief and towards the end he wasn't even comfortable riding the thing 10 miles into town because "I wasn't sure the bloody thing would start again". He changed to an RT which he loves.
