Well my 2014 1190 was really struggling to turn over which I originally thought was down to a poor battery. Anyway, after a little digging I started to read about other owners who were experiencing similar issues and how their problems had been rectified by installing an updated starter motor (from a 1290).

so with low expectations I contacted my local KTM dealer (Craigs Motorcycles in Dewsbury) expecting the usual barrage of excuses about how it's probably something I'm doing wrong, etc etc....

Within 5 mins the plan was agreed and within a week the new updated 1290 starter was fitted.

A few points worthy of mention at this point:

1. if you are experiencing similar problems then contact your dealer or KTM UK as they are clearly acknowledging the problem and, in my case, proving uprated kit at their own cost.
2. A shout goes to Craigs mototorcycles for getting this sorted quickly and efficiently. They also installed the latest engine map which feels grand.
3. Craigs gave me a 1290 Superduke to play with whilst mine was in their workshop. Bloodyhell, what an engine!. Shame they decided not to put a screen on it as the hurricane in my face was a complete pain in the hole.
4. The uprated 1290 starter motor is a huge improvement. The bike fires immediately and generally runs smoother, albeit this fact could be linked to the new engine map.

In summary I'm loving the bike even more and would recommend a similar course of action to anyone whomis experiencing similar starting issues

Good luck

Cheers

This is a known issue which most dealers are now aware of and happy to upgrade the starter motor

Some KTM dealers try that little bit harder than others and it seems like you've got a good un :thumb2

mentioned it to my KTM dealer and they happily went through an apparently compulsory test procedure, which it passed. they say nothing can be done until it fails.

on the plus side, it still works, and hasn't left me stranded.

It's more of an issue when the air temperature gets below 5 centigrade, then the original stater really seems to struggle - mine let me down several times last winter.
The 1290 starter motor makes a big difference and is much more confidence inspiring.

i cant see KTM fitting one for free in my case. might bung one in myself if i feel it warrants it. just now, it doesn't really.
