Hi, I'm looking to replace the tyres on my 1190 R.

I'm looking for something I can get out on the lanes with but still need something half decent on the road.

To give you an idea of what I want to do I've got the taffy at the end of the month and we're tagging a few days road riding either side of the weekend. I also live just outside the Peak District and it's nice to have the ability to bag a few lanes while I'm out. I don't need an aggressive off road tyre but more a "dual sport"

I've used TKC 80's in the past and been largely happy with them but wondered if anyone has any other recommendations before I go this route? The TKC 70 looks good but I think it might be to road biased. I had a set of K60's on my GS but didn't get on with them so I've ruled them out. I've considered MT21's as I liked them in the dirt on my 650 X Challenge but they seemed to last about 10 minutes (this was a few years ago and they may be a lot better now. Our American cousins seem to like the Tractionator adventure tyre but I can't find a UK distributor.

As mentioned this is for the "R" 21" front and 18" rear. If anyone's got any feedback it's be gratefully received . Cheers!

* I should also add I had Karoo 3's for a trip to Romania last year on the GS and they were pretty good but has anyone tried them on their KTM?

My opinion on this, is ....... (!!) that you won't find (like anywhere) a tyre that will spank a road, and then do a byway (reasonably well) Or, grip a muddy byway and let you have a proper play with confidence and then give you a spirited tarmac road ride home.

There will no doubt be a load of replies saying that TKC 80's for example, are great, (and I think they are - I regularly stick them on my R and go off roading), but then they're a compromise on tarmac. TKC70's will be a compromise on a byway - especially if it starts getting soft.

So in short, there is imho no magic solution!

Giles, I completely agree with the above, there's always going to be a compramise. I'd kind of already decided to go with the TKC's but it's always interesting to hear others experiences. Tyre technology moves along at a fast rate so there may be an alternative out there I'm not aware of...

I'm just looking forward to getting the trail attacks off and a more off road rubber fitted. I enjoyed taking my old GS off road but I can't wait to get the Kato onto the lanes

Ha ha .... Cato off road, whilst still a big old beast does pretty well .... :thumb2

Nice picture:cool:

If I remember correctly the TKC's have a soft side wall, what pressure were you runnning and what mileage did you get out of them Giles?

TKC70 done ok on deep loose (dry) dirt and grass but haven't tried them on wet dirt (just realised this is the KTM section..... sorry)

Sent using a Jedi mind trick!

Just out of interest what is you opinion/experience of the Trail Attacks for road use only, forget off road for a moment?

I find the trail attacks good enough for near enough any degree of stupidity on the road in the dry and they still give enough confidence in the wet to be able to avoid being in a constant state of concern about whether or not you're about to go Tarmac surfing.

That might be more about having a misguided sense of invincibility brought on by all the electronic gubbins but hey ho, as long as I'm happy that's what matters most :D

i've used trail attacks on two 1190s and two GSAs neither of which had any of yer fancy electronical gubbins beyond ABS. i thought they were great, with loads of grip wet or dry, though i suspect the tread pattern was causing a non threatening weave that became apparent on my 1190S as they wore down. no problem at all on the GSAs, and none yet on the 1190R.

Ditto Cookie re the TA 2's (no weave though and I'm at the point of having to replace the tyres).

Re the OP; have you seen the new Michelin Wilds? Available in 21" but only 17" rear at the moment, I believe 18" rears will be available soon.

Just a rock of chalky flint that I didn't see. I think I was running about 25psi ....

Rushy ..... Trail attacks on the road were fine. I'm limited with a 21 / 90/90 front so can't use your traditional 'road' tyres. Currently on Dunlop Trail Smarts which are very good ....

Have to agree with the above, found them brilliant on both my GS's and the KTM but I woundn't want to head off road on them.

I would say they're better in the wet. No much between the two in the dry ... :thumb2

I would say pretty good actually, I got about 6k out the rear of a trailsmart and I'm normally changing rear tyres at about 4k ....

Thanks for the replies on the Trail Attacks. I have PR4 trails on the Crosstourer at the moment and the rear has squared off after about 3.5k miles and is effecting the handling when changing direction I think due to weight and power they can eat rear tyres a bit quick . I have heard the Trail Attacks can be quite well worn and still feel pretty much as they did when they were fresh.
