i've just been quoted £310 for a pair of the OEM Conti Trail Attack 2 ZR tyres fitted to loose wheels on my 1190

and that includes an unknown element of "mates rates" as well. seems an absurdly high price, but i'm told they are "KTM fitment only", whatever the fuck that means, and that is why they are so expensive.

AFACT Conti are the only tyre firm that list a recommended fitment for this bike. KTM themselves list 3 types: TA 2s, TKC 80s and Roadsmart 2s which are a road tyre and according to dunlop's website do not come in the sizes needed for the bike :blast

so, what tyres have others fitted, and were you happy with them?

The TA2 come on the gs toilet as well and I thought were the same size. They may not be Z rated on that though which leads to the usual argument of what will the insurance company say, yada yada.

Just checked and yes the BMW ones are lower speed rating.

I thought the reason for getting the 'vanilla' over the R was tyre choice? ;)

Seriously though, what's precluding you from any number of tyres out there with 19" fronts? Is it the width/aspect ratio?

And yeah, £350, WTF?!?!?

so did i, but it's not as simple as i thought

size is not a problem, there is plenty of choice, only problem is matching the Z rating AFAICS. i don't really see that as much of an issue if KTM can recommend the TKC which is a Q (>100mph) tyre.

I emailed Michelin about their PR4 tyres, reply quoted below:

I fitted a set of PR 4 trails to my 1190 adv last week. If the tyre explodes at warp speed, I wont' sue Michelin :)

"Thanks for getting in touch with Michelin and your interest in our Pilot Road 4 Trail tyres.

Unfortunately the OE tyres on the 1190 Adventure have a speed index of W, and our Pilot Road 4 Trail tyres are limited to a V speed index which is lower than the W index required to offer a direct replacement, hence no Michelin recommendation.

Unfortunately we currently have no plans to produce a W rated version of the tyre, though this may change in the future.

Best regards,

pretty much what i supposed, except i was reading the wrong letter for the speed rating :blast

makes you wonder why KTM have specified W rated tyres for a bike that won't break 150mph and weighs less than a GS which is fine with V rated tyres?

Probably because it still has too many ponies, even if it's not streamlined enough to do the speed. The stresses on the tyre putting those ponies down will still be too much for a lower rated tyre. Allegedly.

Aren't they ZW or something like that (miles away from the bike just now) which is over 150 but no more than whatever W is. Either way it's irrelevant to me when they can recommend the tkc 80, I will be using the lower rated ones when the time comes.

they are 120/70 ZR 19 M/C 60W TL front and 170/60 ZR 17 M/C 72W TL rear - W rating which is up to 168mph.

i have since found OEM Contis a fair bit cheaper than i was initially quoted - £275 at the KTM dealer and £251 on loose wheels at Pro Tyre.

I'm using the Metzler Tourance Next which are the lower speed rating, black and round and rarely go over 100 mph. The front is lasting well, the rear has about 5,000 miles and not long to go. Although I have always had Michelin's I didn't like the PR4's on the 1190, hence the Metzler's

JT Tyres are doing me a set of OEMs at a more competitive price. a bit above the V rated varieties, but acceptable. sounds like i made the right decision to avoid the PR4s.

i loved the OEM TA's, but i fancied a change as though they wore at a reasonable rate, still nearly 4mm on the back at 5K+, but the wear pattern has caused a bit of a deceleration wobble. at least, i think it's the tyres. i'll find out next week :)

Around £185 for the pair from Tyre Leader and throw them on yourself. I got a pair for my 1190 r from them, arrived in 3 days.

Never fitted tubeless tyres before and thought they might be hard work but it turned out to be a lot easier than than swapping my 300 EXC tyres (more rim space). Tyres nowadays are so accurate in production the balance weights are only there to offset the tps sensors in the rim so no need to touch them.

i am considering the DIY option. done plenty of tubed tyres in my time, but no experience of tubeless.

on the other hand, for 1 set a year it makes little financial sense, and it's much easier to get a pro to do it :nenau
