11th October 2008 - Wiltshire Green Lane Rideout - Big trailie friendly

then..we found this...
BigTralieDayOct2008024.jpg

Having watched a local in his 4x4 go thru it...then watching Adam go thru it, I decided that I'd ride round...as I drew level with it, John on his Vigor decided to go for it and was doing well till he dropped off the raised centre section and propmptly fell off it..and dissapeared under the bike !

Concerned he might be stuck I jumped in to help him right it and then get the bike out of the water/sludge.

the bike would turn over but not fire and as it had submerged completely we decided to strip it...

Honda did NOT build that bike with trail stripping in mind....

we eventually had to stand it on it's tail to empty the exhaust..

it's side to empty the airbox..

the totally upside down to empty the inlet tract...

we then had to spin it over with the plug removed to "pump" the water out of it...the general consensus was.."Thank fook it's not a BMW"

soon the battery was flat..no kick back up ..deepjoy !

Jump leads to the rescue and the Panzer divisions battery...

keeping the GSA running to prevent flat battery on that (as we REALLY didn't want to be bump starting THAT !

This proved usefull in two ways..Ace boy (rather ingeniously) used the nice and warm cylinder heads on my BM to dry the rather damp airfilter while we spun the bike over attempting to start it...sorted !

eventually.after about and hour or so... we finally managed a chugging...then a popping then it burst (well sort of ) into life Whooo HOoo.....

Credit to everyone there I feel...

the tools....I think we used something from everyones kit on that bast bike !

the man power, we'd not have tipped it about without everyone

and finaly the patience in waiting, not one moan about the time it was taking...

Oh yeah...top marks to Jazzy for melting the screwdriver with lots of amps DC...

So..we finally managed to get on our way again..

this was the results of John, dip in the water..

The rest of the day really went without a hitch..Ok a few of the heavyweights threw themselves at the scenery inc somebody on a Yellow 1150 on road tyres.. who I nearly ran down cos he managed to take the WHOLE track up and I couldnt stop... but I'll not mention him..

So to sum up...

a top day, cracking weather and some great blokes...

I really enjoyed it and would do it again...so long as I can get the bastard Panzer clean again before the next one..

Sunday

A cracking ride back up towards Oxford as I was "escorted" from the county... and then a quick 2.5 hrs up the M-way back to the home job done !

Really nice meeting you all, nice to put names to faces and if I do a proper ride up here Dan, you'll be sure to know mate!

heres looking forward to the next one..

Hey Ian, it was good to meet you

Dan (Blue DRZ (Tailender))

Does anyone have any tracks/coordinates - wouldnt mind comparing it with where we ended up...

Only spent sunday morning on the plain as such. Rest of the time was spent south and west of Salisbury...

We did the lane past Stonehenge from Larkhill first off, but it was so foggy I don't think many even realised.
Then we headed over to Chitterne/Copehill Down and the OIBUA training area, before heading south past Yarnbury castle to Salisbury race course, onto Shaftesbury drove than back on the Ox drove.

Hm. We must have come close to bumping into each other then...

On old shaftsbury grove. That goes for miles and miles. Awesome fun. What time were you on that? We started from Salisbury, went to Shaftsbury. Came back via the much-more-boggy one that kinda parallels it (further south) (which might be Ox Drove).
Was Ox Drove the one with the f-off deep waterhole not far from the A354 end.... damn near seat-height... & the 950 is a tall bike...

Hm. No, I see Ox drove is someplace else...

At about half two to half three ish.

Yes that is the Ox Drove.

I headed north before that puddle as a) I knew it was there and knew the GSs struggle with water that deep and b) time was getting on.

No. It really is there. Trust me.

Ah. I suspect we had just finished at 2:30 and were off in Shaftsbury feeding our face.

Ok - so that was ox drive.

Amazing trail that shaftsbury grove. I had the bike dancing along those bumps/puddles/woops. Loads of fun. And the scenery was nice too. The one big green basin there near the gypsy caravan ....:nod oh, if only it was possible (read: allowed) to get down there, would be awesome fun.

Down that way again tomorrow!

Saturday.
Might be the last days of decent weekend weather.
Keep an eye out for 2 black 950's :thumb

It's more fun in the wet anyhow.

I will mostly be bolting HIDs and a fender extender onto my GSA tomorrow.

There's a few of them tbh. A drove was just route to herd livestock to market towns, in this case mainly ox.
There is one in Hampshire and IIRC in Surrey also.

Anything tricky involved in getting to Imber?

Planning on approaching from Heytesbury...
