120 BHP GS1200

Part of me thinks, "cool 120bhp" but the other part thinks I had plenty more on my 08 Fireblade I traded in for the GS as it was a better all round bike for my needs...

The GS ADV could definatley do with some extra BHP if fully laded with the extra weight it carries but the standard GS, I don't think it really needs it....

Seems to be true..I saw a Truck today with '2000 nm' as its' power output badge instead of the usual BHP Number.... :thumb

Different market though, innit....? :augie That's about how much the thing will haul. For performance, the issue is torque over a wide rev band and the ability to pull high revs for top speed.

I've always reckoned 100 bhp was enough for a GS most of the year but that 120 bhp would be optimum when the roads are warm and dry enough to get the rubber up to temperature. I'm looking forward to trying a GS with Megamoto performance....:D

A dilemma?

Don't know what to think. Having just got an Aprilia RSV1000R for the hell of it: I am enjoying the electric acceleration and a twist grip that doesn't go round the bar twice if you know what I mean. Would I want that kind of power in my GS? Think the answer is yes if I could also be assured of the reliability and ruggedness my 1150GS currently offers - which is unlikely. Also I'm not sure about chomping through rear tyres every 3000miles. Guess it all comes down to horses for courses. The perfect bike hasn't yet been built - though put my two together and you get very close to it.
But, but, but ....... in 20 months I retire and SWMBO has agreed to me getting a new GS so I can go riding and not get under her feet. Guess the only new GS to buy then will be the 120BHP one. Dilemma sorted.

I briefly looked at the article in MCN, IIRC it reckoned peak power would be at 8750 revs?

The reason I chose the F650GS twin over the F800GS is that the 'greater power' of the F800GS was only available over 7000 revs. I can't remember the last time I deliberately went over 6000.

What's all important is torque but that doesn't make the headlines.

Ok the 1100 is only 80 bhp n 70ish ft lb ...my bandit 1200 was around 120 bhp with a few bits done to it.:augie

only thing is ,my bandit wasnt very good if i fancied taking the dirt track by the canal home.:(

this is why ill stick wi me GS and its 80bhp:D

Does the article mention torque at all?

Torque for acceleration (big grins); BHP for top speed (points/ban).

More torque would be nice.

More BHP - waste of time/effort. The standard '09 1200GS top speed is enough thanks.

I already own it ....

It's my super pimped out 08 GSA with Akra end can, sport headers , blue filter and Performance controller fitted :) Well only 119 bhp, but who's counting :) ....

too much is never enough.......

In the real world, an R1 riden on the same road as a gillera runner can keep together, im not sure it matters how much power your bike has, its how you use it.... im happy with my 07 GSA.

+1.

That'll be where torque comes in then (as opposed to BHP)...

120 bhp?

It was in Motorcycle Screws.
Read it again. All hearsay and possibility, nothing From manufacturers.
We will see it, if it exists, when we see it, until then everything is speculation with a view to selling copy.
Myke.

The artical claims the 1200 gs will gain 22 bhp, add that to the claimed current 105 and its nearly 130.

Does the article mention torque at all?
"the detune (from the HP2) will spread torque lower in the range making the bike easier to ride at touring speeds"

itd be nice, but ill stick wi mine for a few years, see what warranty probs crop up 1st, i dont trust bmw anymore

I will wait until the third year of production once they have all the bugs worked out. Love me 09 GSA.

D

I can't see them using the HP2 lump in that it is a lightened unit with balancer shaft removed for weight and higher revs.

Again it sounds like MCN made up reporting

They're not suggesting that the GS is going to be fitted with the HP2 engine.

They are suggesting that the GS is going to be fitted with a detuned version of the DOHC HP2 Sport engine....

Rubbish

Its speculation and BMW UK have told their dealers that the 2010 model will "be relatively modest" in increases in power, torque and performance increases.

Mind you......if you had stock of all those 2009 GS's...and you were the official distrubutor for the UK.........wouldnt you say that ?

5 year product life-cycle.......when did the 1200 come out again ?

:)

Sorry.
I should have read the article.

Well, if they do put a de-tuned version of the HP2S engine in the GS, then we are in for a real treat.:clap

I’m lucky to own a HP2S, and I can confirm that the engine is a beauty. Compared to my 09 GSA, it revs much quicker, has more midrange and peak power, and its smoother. I suppose the engine feels more like a V twin than a Boxer (though it still has the boxer character).
